When I go to select a message are ro read with golded, it says the messagebase is locked. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Sounds like an issue with GoldEd or your configuration of it. Since presumably the Synchronet/SMB support in GoldEd has been used succesfully in the past, I would first took a good hard look at your configuration of it.

of a software application that cause it to not run properly, eh?

Yes that's true. One wrong setting can throw off everything.
