• Max number of messages?

I'm curious - what do you have the maximum number of messages set to per
    base?

In this sub? 5000. In others, it varies between 1000 and 10000. Getting into the 5+ digits of total messages can cause some cosmetic challenges in the terminal server, but those may have all be resolved by now.

I keep 2000 per base and that has been doing what I wanted to do.

Storage is not an issue these days so I could keep more but I haven't found a reason to.

Dovenet bases are set to 100000 each, Fidonet is set to "Unlimited" and my newsgroup areas run around 50000-100000.

maybe only a handful have topped out at their maximum, and as the years go by scanning the message bases becomes slower and slower due to their size. My /data/subs directory is 4.5GB as of right now spread over about 550 message areas. 2.3GB of that is in newsgroups, of which there are about 50.

Regular smbutil is vital to keep the size down and the speed tolerable. At one point alt.os.linux.ubuntu got so bloated the sdt and sdh files were many GB in size, I believe I had a set the limit to 1,000,000 messages, and hadn't run smbutil on it due to it being in a subfolder of /sbbs/data/subs and it became a giant pain, especially when I was trying to run backups.

.. and thank you for doing that, having a long history of messages. When I need a quick reference to a specific Synchronet thing, often the google search gives a link to a forum on your board I can review in my web browser :-)

unlimited with purge by days set to 1100...
1100 days is just over 3 years...
why 3 years? that's the FTN MSGID recycle allowed period...
in other words, the FTN MSGID spec says that MSGIDs are not supposed to repeat within three years so we choose to retain messages for that time period...

    365.25 * 3 = 1095.75 days

by using 1100 days, a nice round and easy to remember number, we have a small buffer of 4.25 days over the three year limit...

Which begs the question about which areas/networks should be searchable on
the web... I know the topic has come up in some othernets from time to time, and I've typically kept most of my networked areas unavailable to the guest user.

I used to keep my networked subs hidden from Guest(s) but now I just restrict posting. The only reason for my change is mainly because most of the same messages are already being 'offered' by other 'sources' so what the hell :-)
I guess in the end it basically falls on each sysop to adhere to the policies set out in each net a board carries, which seems they are all public :/
