From Zazz@VERT/PBSYNC to All on Monday, September 28, 2020 14:16:42
I currently have sbbs v3.18 running. I wanted to do a clean fresh install, intstead of an upgrade. But I do not want to redo my menus or my file areas or message areas.

I was thinking that I could copy my files (like menus and other text files I've modified.) but am not sure the best way to get my file dir and message over.

    Suggestions, please?

My first suggestion would be to not do a "clean fresh install" then. The whole point of doing a fresh install is not have (start with) any configuration or data, but it sounds like you want to retain at least some of your existing configuration / data. So it would be better (less work, less risk) to just update/upgrade your existing installation.

If you really must/want to do a clean install, then you'd want to copy over your old text/* files and some of your ctrl/*.cnf files (e.g. file.cnf, for the file area configuration, msgs.cnf for the message area configuration). But copying some .cnf files and not others may present problems. Try it and see. <shrug>

Thanks, I'll just do the upgrade.

Side note. I have one fidonet message area that (classic computer) that always starts me a message 1 even though I go through to end and it always sets me back to the first message. I think somehow it is corrupted, just guessing, is there a util to check message bases?

    Yes:

When you say "always start me a message 1", I don't know if you're referring to a new message scan or what. But in any case, your pointer (both last read and new-message pointers) are stored in data/user/<usernum>.subs (e.g. 0001.subs).
