• Synchronet BBS used for drug ads

From The Millionaire@VERT to All on Friday, July 03, 2020 18:50:38
I've noticed lately that people are starting to use SBBS for drug
advertising. That is very sad for the BBS world.

It's coming from a couple BBSes that don't have their stuff locked down. Contact the Sysop if it bothers you.

I'm thinking it may not be a bad idea to add a flag to a user that signs up via the web interface, and disallow posting by default for users with that flag in new synchronet installs.

I'm thinking it may not be a bad idea to add a flag to a user that signs up via the web interface,
and disallow posting by default for users with that flag in new synchronet installs.

For ecwebv4, newuser_restrictions is an optional setting in modopts.ini -> [web]. Adding E, M, N, and P by default is possible. The user should be told/forced to send a message to the sysop, or the sysop otherwise notified.

I have zero interest in working on this right now, but maybe in the next couple of days.

Can't fix what's already out there, though. Those who care about this might reach out to the offending sysop(s) and ask them to fix their shit.

I'll accept approximately 42% of the blame for this.

FWIW, I don't think I allow newuser reg via the web on my board, and it is currently disabled by default for new installs of ecwebv4.

I did last week, when a spammer posted to all of DOVE-Net. Never heard back from the sysop (I used QWK netmail).

Not a bad idea - I'd rather have them go through the login/reg

This setting isn't applied by default. If a sysop wants to use it, they need to add that key/value pair to modopts.ini -> [web]. It's mentioned in the wiki of the GitHub repo for webv4.

Not all are. Yes, some of the spam over the last day or two has come from the newsgroup, but other spam appears to have come directly from a BBS, most likely due to an unsecured web interface.

No way, ec... you can't feel bad for extending the functionality of this software. It's awesome that you post ways to fix an issue, but I would much rather be richer from the work you've already done than have have you stop because a future issue might arise!!

You rock, and the group of folks who bust their ass for Synchronet are the reason I use the software. Thank yous!

Nobody is using SBBS for that... it's coming in from nntp/usenet access

once again, you're not paying attention... those are forum spambots... they're fairly intelligent and can set up accounts for use on forums and apparently now on some BBS web interfaces... in most cases i've tracked over the
years, they are a one-shot dump and run and they're likely to never appear on that site again...

Probably should just enable that by default, I guess? I dunno. I'm bad with ACL stuff.
