What exactly are the avat-in and out doing exactly? Updating avatars between all the bbs? It seems to take my vm to a crawl when it runs. Is there any reason to run this 24 times a day or can this be set to run at midnight?

I can see no reason to run it 24 times a day, even if it doesn't
load down a system. Mine runs once a day.

It's not that odd if you knew what I was running the bbs on now. 8-) Synology DS216+II NAS with 8gb of ram as a VM. Everything seems to run fine until this event runs and then it crawls. Since you said its fine to change the frequency I will just run it at midnight. Thanks!

It's odd because that task is not very intensive. I suspect you're going to see other Synchronet things/events taxing that VM as well. :-(

The other events seem fine when they run. I think its anything disk intensive is spiking the vm CPU until it finishes. Mail doesn't bother it and nightly game maint doesn't bother it except for the one for usurper. I don't expect it to break any speed records as the cpu in the NAS is a lowend dual core celeron. 8-) It is kind of cool that it works though.

Well if anything, I would either AVAT-IN (import) to possibly use a lot of I/O (scanning the msgbase) but not AVAT-OUT (export). And even AVAT-IN is only going to scan *new* messages that were imported since the last time it ran. So yeah, doesn't really make sense.

1. that import (not export).

2. that sounds like it's re-importing the entire message base?
double-check your the [avatars] section of your data/subs/syncdata.ini file, the "import_ptr" value should be updated every time the avatars.js import event run and the next run should read that value and skip all the previously scanned messages. There is a debug log line output from avatars.js as well which may be helpful "import_ptr = x last_msg = y". These values and the values in the syncdata.ini file and the actual message numbers (e.g. last_msg value as displayed with the "smbutil s" command) of your syncdata sub-board would be helpful in getting to bottom of it.

it just depends on how up-to-date you want them to be on your system...

kinda like QWKnet polling... in the synchronet areas that are gated between FTN and QWKnets, i regularly get new posts on the FTN side sooner than from the QWKnetworking side... this because FTN is running ASAP and passing the mail on as soon as it is ready whereas QWKnetworking is more like end users pulling the mail from a bbs for offline use... sure, the QWKnet polling can be increased for more lively traffic flow but that means more, possibly empty, polling...

that number should drop quite a lot the next time the event runs... the avatars are not updated all that often...

the above would seem to be like a first time import after just starting the sbbs distributed database message area... the avatar import should keep up with the last message it imported from and continue from that message the next time the import is run...

that message base is also where the synchronet BBS list and the dating matcher door are updated from ;)

Yep, I see that too. I have my QWK polling at 12/day which seems
to be fine.
