• Timed Events (Door Maintenance)

    Good day.

I'm having one more issue with my Synchronet Install (upon Windows 2003 R2) that I can't quite figure out.

I have a timed event configured to run a batch file for door game maintenance. Try as I may, Synchronet just flat out does not run the file.

As a test, I set the event to run at 7:40am this morning. Nothing in the logs.

    Event is configured as:

    Start up: C:\Doors
    Command Line: Doormnt.bat
    Enabled: Yes
    Execution Node: 1
    Days of Month: Any
    Days of Week: All
    Time 07:40
    Exclusive Exec: Yes
    Force Users Off: Yes

Within my batch file are logging commands to verify it ran and processed; this log is only updated if I run that batch file manually.

    Any tips on this one?

It's probably the exclusive execution toggle. Are *all* the nodes inactive? They will have to be for the event to run.

Yes, all nodes are inactive. I tried again last night with having exclusive off; and nothing in the logs to even indicate it is running. In fact, my logs right now end at 9:58pm, when I changed the event back to running at 4am. And the file never ran.

If I force-run the event, it fires off; although I get an "Out of environment space" on almost each command within the batch file.
Change to "Use Shell to Execute":

well, that seems to eliminate a jammed event holding up the events and preventing them from executing...

Your messages are almost un-readable because of all the quoting
and wrapping problems. Not sure why, could be the newsgroup
    method of posting them... Anyway:

If your .js events are running but "batch files" are not, I'd
recommend checking/setting the "Native executable" and "Use shell"
choices to "Yes" (on the batch file events) and see if that helps.

The timed events are run by the "Events thread" which is spawned by the Terminal Server (called the "Telnet Server" or "BBS Server" back in the v3.13a timeframe, iirc). The output (log messages) of the Events thread goes to the "Events" windows of the Synchronet Control Panel, not to a file on disk. So you need to watch that window for timed event activity. Since this is a single thread, if any timed events gets "stuck" (never completes execution) that could stop other timed events from running.

No auto-run at 8am. Events log shows nothing.

It's only going to run once a day if you set a specific time. So if you force the event to run at 7am, it's not going to run again until the *next day* at 8am. If you want to reset the times that events ran, delete the file ctrl/time.dab.

Old version of SBBS because I deployed this quite some time ago, and am now just attempting to ressurect it. Originally running on Server 2000, as I didn't understand SBBS had its own "shell", and thought older server versions were required in order to run DOS games. I've since moved SBBS to a 2003 R2 instance, because a door game that I programmed back in the 90's failed to execute on 2000, but would on 2003.
If I can still run older DOS doors on a newer version of SBBS (thought I saw req'd C++ 2015 redist, which may not install on 2003 R2) - then I could go that route.
I will try clearing the ctrl/time.dab files to see if the event fires off, as well as the suggestion to enable Native Executable. Shell is already enabled.
Actually had a few moments to try this. 2:51pm now. Enabled Native Executable (makes sense, as cmd.exe is in the Native Programs list), removed time.dab and restarted BBS. Event configured for 2:55pm.
    Smoke break...
And we have success at 2:55pm!
Thanks for the assist all! Much appreciated!
