• Web interface file areas

From Dumas Walker@VERT/CAPCITY2 to ALL on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 14:48:00
I don't doubt I have something set up wrong, but here goes...

It used to be when I was logged onto the BBS via the web interface, I could click on File Libraries, it would open up a page and I could click on and download files.

Now, whether I am using Firefox or Chromium, when I click on File
Libraries, I am asked if I want to open or download the 00index.html file.
If I choose open, it will open that page OK, but every link on that page is prefixed with "file:///" instead of "http://" or "ftp:" . So, of course,
it thinks that every link is on the local machine.

Is that a bug I picked up during a recent pull down, or do I have something
    set up wrong now?

    Thanks!

That name is configurable, so you can change it.

The long-held standard was "00index" (no extension) and FTP clients (e.g. FTP Explorer) would automatically detect and use the contents "00index", I'm not so sure if they would recognize/use 00index.txt, but it's worth a shot. Anyway, please feel free to experiment and let us know what you find!

It does. I probably need to give the File Library features some more attention, but they exist and they work.

Also, I don't think there's any consistent plan for updating or maintaining the stock/runemaster web UI, so the chances of its File Libray stuff being upgraded are pretty slim.

The stock/legacy/runemaster web UI actually doesn't really have a File Library thing, it just points to the FTP-server's JS-generated HTML URL
    e.g. ftp://vert.synchro.net/00index.html?$<rand-num>

... and that HTML is generated by exec/ftp-html.js, unless the sysop changed the config to use exec/ftp-web-html.js instead, which uses a theme/style matching the default runemaster web UI. Either way, it's the FTP server that's executing the JavaScript and serving up the dynamically-generated HTML. Which was a pretty cool thing while it lasted but now that browsers have stopped rendering files served via FTP, it's pretty much moot and will probably be ripped out at some point. Oh wells.

I thought I read that the plan was to eventually just include your ecweb as part of Synchronet (I know it was with the last release, but the Runemaster interface was still there too, as an option). It seems like the Runemaster interface hasn't had much attention for a long time. Yours seems simpler to add to and maintain, and it works well, so I don't see why ecweb couldn't be the standard web interface for Synchronet now.

It may be missing some features that already exist in the Runemaster UI, so in a sense it *could* be a downgrade. Unfortunately I don't have a list of everything the old UI can do, so it's hard to be sure of feature parity.
