Hey DM. Are you ever considering Synchronet BBS Free Cloud Services in the near
    future?

    What does that mean?

    What "services" would be included?

I know it's hard for you to type out a longer message on your iPad, but for fuck's sake please at least make an attempt every once in a while.

Like everyone else, I can only guess at your meaning. If you're asking if I'm considering allowing other sysops to run their BBSes on my hardware and Internet connection, the answer is no, I'm not considering that.

Possibly Amazon. They used to offer VMs which, at BBS levels of traffic, would cost nothing or pennies per month. I haven't looked recently.

You're not likely to find a BBS-specific service unless MarisaG wants to give you a freebie (and she shouldn't if she values her sanity).

As others have stated, "MarisaG" offers hosting, and every now and
then I see a post from her (in Dovenet, I think) offering a free
account for someone to share a server with her.

Here is her website, perhaps a polite request to her would pay
    dividends...?

    http://synchronetbbs.org/index.php/bbs-hosting

Other options include very cheap Linux VPS hosting. I have used
both Linode and Free Range Cloud VPS's in the past, and both of
them offer a suitable deal for $5.00/month.

Yes, I have a free shared server available for would-be sysops. If you want a dedicated server that is $14/month with first month free. If you want the shared server do this:
    1 - Go to https://SynchronetBBS.org/HostSplash
2 - Choose the default plan
3 - When checking out use the "offline" payment method so you don't have to pay.
4 - In the comment be sure and put you want the free shared offer.

I can get that set up relatively quickly...

Looking forward to working with you!

Mark aka Rampage changed his ways with me and we're getting along a lot better than we did before. Why can't you man? You have some serious issues

I've tried, maybe you didn't notice. I've answered several of your questions and attempted to get the conversation back on track.

problems in your life it looks like. When someone picks on someone else for no
reason it means you're looking for power. What goes around, comes around.

Spare me the amateur psychology. I'm not "picking on you" and my criticisms have not been "for no reason".

    Let me explain:

When I asked you to fuck off, it was because nothing else had worked. People asked you to change your behaviour, but you did not. I made an attempt, and it failed. It was worth a shot. That's troubleshooting.

I've asked you to put in a little more effort. Phrase your questions with more detail, etc. This has not helped.

I don't respond to most of your messages, and I'm not always rude or critical when I do. You only seem to notice the times when I am.

I'm not throwing personal attacks or insults your way. I'm asking you to be a better member of our community. Perhaps this is too nuanced for you. If you can't distinguish between valid criticism and a personal attack, you're in for a lot of hurt feelings. I've been there.

Try harder. Do better. Stop blaming everybody else.

ryan> I wish FTN could support a gif of me eating popcorn
ryan> while this whole thing unfolds :P

it can/does... the software just has to know how to handle the ^A control line with that information ;)

i'm aware of only one or two packages that do that and both are traditional sysop readers... golded is one and now i cannot remember the other... the control line is/was ^AGIF and the gif has to already be on the readers' system... there is/was another ^A line that also provided similar but i don't recall it... no BBSes supported either of those i'm aware of, though... they were just control info in the message...

Then you're in the wrong place because nobody cares as echicken says and everybody talks about everything out in the open and nobody trusts anyone here. But it's a popular network which is linked worldwide.

People talk out in the open here because that's how public message networks work.

I don't understand what you mean about the "public connector". Can you explain?
There are 2 options with Door Party you can have the Door Party connector or use there public connector. The wiki says they took the public connector down due to a high number of bots and will update when its back up. Mine and a few other of her systems havent been able to connect in over a week.

Usually systems connect to DoorParty via DoorParty Connector, which is something you run on your own server. There's a newer version of this program, but the documentation needs a bit of work; I'll take a crack at that tonight. Maybe after that you and others will be able to get it set up more easily.

Theres the Door Party connector you run on your server and now theres a Door Party connector thats public so you no longer have to run it on your server

As far as I know, maskreet discontinued the public one. I'm honestly not sure what it was or why it existed.

Again, I'll try to touch up the docs and such for DoorParty Connector. It isn't hard to use, nor is it resource intensive. There isn't much reason to avoid it.

Still, it's not necessary. You're asking for a free service and in turn starting a fire, then adding fuel to it. I don't think anyone cares if you archive what's been said to you and there was no need to mention it. That's just a tool to use to go back and quote someone when they misspeak, and that didn't happen in this instance.

Yes, both work I guess. I think DosBox might be more configurable
and (to me at least) seems to be more like "real DOS". The *only*

not having ever run dosbox, i don't know how to process that statement... why? because with DOSemu you can run any DOS you want... i've been using the default FreeDOS that comes with DOSemu but have, in the past, also used MSDOS 6...

one of the items on my huge TODO list is to see if and how well 4DOS runs as a command interpreter on a DOS under DOSemu... not that i'm considering doing such, but that might let me get one node of my old RA/FD/FE system back in operation... especially since that whole installation is managed using 4DOS features and capabilities in the scripts ;)

Dosbox is coming with a lot of distributions now instead of dosemu. I've only used it once as I uninstalled it and compiled and installed dosemu after but it seems more like an out of the box type emulator, little configuration.

But for the sake of argument, Synchronet works with dosemu, so to anyone reading this, might as well just use dosemu and forget about dosbox unless support for that would be integrated down the road which I doubt.

thedraw, specifically, is a 16bit DOS command line ANSI app used to draw ANSI screens... at minimum it would require DOSemu or similar on a linux system...

Ya that is likely to not work on the server itself, would be better to use it locally and then upload the files...

She's saying that if you want to use TheDraw, you should run it on your local computer, and then upload them to the server afterward.

You'll want to use an SFTP client or similar for this sort of thing. It'd be the most straightforward way of transferring files (such as text.dat, your ANSI screens, etc.) to the server for internal use.

You *could* technically upload things via Synchronet, but it'd be a pretty clunky approach. You should acquaint yourself with some basics of managing a remote server.

I have several ssh/telnet clients on my iPhone. Pretty sure they

That way you can ssh into the remote server, and/or use scp to

That's not going to work long term, if at all. You'd need to use FTP or SCP, anything, more reliable than Ymodem-G. And honestly, I think the only realistic thing would be to use an SSH client on the iPad (perhaps with an external keyboard) and just create all your content using tools that are available there at the site of the BBS (and not *on* the iPad).

He's uploading it to his BBS, via x/y/zmodem in a telnet session, then later using some form of remote access to the server to copy the file from wherever it landed (somewhere in data/dirs/ presumably).

Yeah, if I had a remote server, I'd probably FTP it to the server. Often I also use VNC to manage remote machines, and some VNC servers & clients allow file transfers over the VNC session.

If I had both my home PC and the remote PC on a VPN, I'd probably create a file share / shared folder on one of the machines and share files via the file share.

With different EOL conventions between Windows and Linux, directly editing files on the BBS has to be done with caution, same for permissions, but it's possible to avoid issues, thanks to Samba's very flexible configuration. I don't think I've even bothered setting up Samba on the BBS. I do use Samba on the Linux "desktop" (which has become more of a server now), mainly to move files between email and the rest of the network.

My BBS machine and my main desktop PC are both in the same room and
on the same network, so I tend to use a shared folder on the network
    to share files between them.

I've seen multiple Windows text editors that support both Windows and *NIX EOL conventions. I use Notepad++ on Windows a lot, and it has an option to convert newlines to either *NIX or Windows style.

i dunno... i don't do dosbox and have no clue if it is even available for linux... 99.9999% of the time, DOS stuff on linux is done via DOSemu...

Dosbox is coming with a lot of distributions now instead of dosemu. I've only used it once as I uninstalled it and compiled and installed dosemu after but it seems more like an out of the box type emulator, little configuration.

The core difference is that DOSBox is a full emulator, from the ground up, so it also emulates the underlying hardware. DOSemu is more like WINE, in that it provides a DOSey interface to the more modern hardware and translates the responses to what the modern hardware expects. So, especially back in the day, DOSemu was a lot faster due to the effeciencies gained in not emulating everything and the kitchen sink, but now the trend is moving strongly toward accuracy in light of the metric crap tonne of disposable CPU cycles everyone seems to have now. :-P

It's funny because *NIX has been around longer than DOS and Windows. Compared to *NIX, the DOS command line is stripped down and simplified quite a bit, and I think there's less you can do with a DOS command line, at least with an interpreter like COMMAND.COM. 4DOS added a bit though.. I thought it was funny when Microsoft added PowerShell for the command line. I was thinking it may have made more sense to just implement something like Bash for Windows.

That's true, and going back to DOS now feels like one is working with a brain dead command line, after being used to a shell like Bash. :)

4DOS was nice in its day, I used it a lot.

Yeah, especially since by then, Linux had become their main competitor in the server space, and providing a command line interface familiar to Linux people would have been a good marketing move. But perhaps porting all those pesky (and GPL'd) GNU utilities that go with Bash might have been too much to stomach. And of course, Bash itself - can't have all that ported source floating around, can we?

Actually, with Microsoft's changed attitudes today, they might have been more inclined to do it, had they not already had Powershell and WSL.

In any case, I know I certainly miss my Bash and GNU utilities when I'm scripting on Windows. ;)

I don't really use them that often, as I have a couple linux machines in my house already (for various purposes), but they're there if I need them.

I keep wondering if Microsoft will try to implement something different from the standards to force developers to support Microsoft stuff. I think that's what Microsoft was doing all those years when Internet Explorer 6 was popular and web developers had to support IE6's bugs & idiosyncrasies. Some web sites even only worked well on IE6 and not very well on other browsers.

I don't think they will. Firstly, today's ecosystems are more heterogenous, especially on the server side, but client wise, it's debateable whether Windows even has a majority, if you include smartphones and tablets. Probably Android is the most used OS now.

Secondly, Microsoft has changed since the days of Steve Ballmer.

This is the truth. We do a lot of work with Microsoft and the
recurring theme I hear when working with MS employees around 40 years
of age and up is how different Microsoft is under Satya. Not to say they've got everything right, but it's a drastically different place
than it was prior to 2015.

Sure, Microsoft isn't perfect, but I do believed they have improved a lot.

Infosec is worried that their client monitoring platforms and AV don't work on it, IT has a monoculture, as they're a Windows shop and no one knows Linux, and they're so invested in one platform that another
platform would require a huge investment.

Hmm, OK. I worked in a smallish business that was mostly DOS/Windows, but had a lot of Linux by the time I finished. The price was right and Linux "just worked" in the days when Microsoft software wasn't anywhere near as good as it is today.

I found out recently how evil they are, and recently at that. When they swallowed up Skype they refused to support any hardware-based Skype-to-TV devices (Skype is in their networking firmware). Mine is in a list of about fifteen. I now have a AUD$220 paperweight but I no longer use paper. It's too

ballmer gets a bad rap, but he trippled revenues and doubled profits for the company.

Indeed. I think businesses need different leaders at different points in their maturity cycle in order to continue to thrive and survive.

bing [which is pretty damn good, better sometimes than google search]
    microsoft hardware in general (surface)
    microsoft azure

ballmer wanted to get into the phone market sooner, which would have
    changed everything.
