Hey DM. Are you ever considering Synchronet BBS Free Cloud Services in near
future?
What does that mean?
What "services" would be included?
I know it's hard for you to type out a longer message on your iPad, but for fuck's sake please at least make an attempt every once in a while.

You're not likely to find a BBS-specific service unless MarisaG wants to give yo u a freebie (and she shouldn't if she values her sanity).

As others have stated, "MarisaG" offers hosting, and every now and
then I see a post from her (in Dovenet, I think) offering a free
account for someone to share a server with her.
Here is her website, perhaps a polite request to her would pay
dividends...?

Other options include very cheap Linux VPS hosting. I have used
both Linode and Free Range Cloud VPS's in the past, and both of
them offer a suitable deal for $5.00/month.

I think the main issue is editing the sbbs.ini file and adding in the servers IP address to the
RLoginInterface rather than leaving it empty. That will let the door connector listen on localhost
port 513...

She's saying that if you want to use TheDraw, you should run it on your local computer, and then upload them to the server afterward.
You'll want to use an SFTP client or similar for this sort of thing. It'd be the most straightforward way of transferring files (such as text.dat, your ANSI screens, etc.) to the server for internal use.
You *could* technically upload things via Synchronet, but it'd be a pretty clunky approach. You should acquaint yourself with some basics of managing a remote server.

putting it in your ctrl directory?
I've done it before and it worked. I save it as a zip and ul it to SBBS then go to the directory behind SBBS where it was placed, unzip it and move it over to Ctrl dir.

Uploading through ftelnet is my only way possible. Remember I have an iPad with limited options.
Part of his question was how you actually upload it to the BBS server, which you didn't answer.. You
glossed over that with "ul it to SBBS".

He's uploading it to his BBS, via x/y/zmodem in a telnet session, then later using some form of remote access to the server to copy the file from wherever it landed (somewhere in data/dirs/ presumably).
Seems like a clunky/cumbersome way of doing it, but that's his problem.

I'd be surprised if there weren't any FTP or remote desktop client apps (or similar) for iOS.. Also if you have the means, perhaps an inexpensive laptop would be a better solution.

Yeah, if I had a remote server, I'd probably FTP it to the server.
Often I also use VNC to manage remote machines, and some VNC servers & clients allow file transfers over the VNC session.
If I had both my home PC and the remote PC on a VPN, I'd probably
create a file share / shared folder on one of the machines and share
files via the file share.

File sharing over VPN can be laggy, I prefer to use SFTP over any great distance.

I never got into mc, but I never really did nc in the DOS days either.
I do a lot of stuff at the command line. :)
Desktop end is Windows, so using WinSCP in SFTP mode usually.
If I am working Linux to Linux, I'm likely to use SCP for that one
off file copy. I tend not to use rsync for "ad hoc" transfers, but
for backups, etc, it's useful.

With different EOL conventions between Windows and Linux, directly editing files on the BBS has to be done with caution, same for permissions, but it's possible to avoid issues, thanks to Samba's very flexible configuration. I don't think I've even bothered setting up Samba on the BBS. I do use Samba on the Linux "desktop" (which has become more of a server now), mainly to move files between email and the rest of the network.

i dunno... i don't do dosbox and have no clue if it is even available for linux... 99.9999% of the time, DOS stuff on linux is done via DOSemu...
Dosbox is coming with a lot of distributions now instead of dosemu. I've only used it once as I uninstalled it and compiled and installed dosemu after but it seems more like an out of the box type emulator, little configuration.

I've seen multiple Windows text editors that support both Windows and
*NIX EOL conventions. I use Notepad++ on Windows a lot, and it has an option to convert newlines to either *NIX or Windows style.
DOS command line was a bit more clunky, Linux certainly has a better command line. Windows did make some improvements on DOS, however.

It's funny because *NIX has been around longer than DOS and Windows. Compared to *NIX, the DOS command line is stripped down and simplified quite a bit, and I think there's less you can do with a DOS command line, at least with an interpreter like COMMAND.COM. 4DOS added a bit though.. I thought it was funny when Microsoft added PowerShell for the command line. I was thinking it may have made more sense to just implement something like Bash for Windows.

Must learn it sometime, though it's obviously not as portable.
Actually, with Microsoft's changed attitudes today, they might have been more inclined to do it, had they not already had Powershell and WSL.

I'm still not totally sure I trust Microsoft's intentions in embracing open source. I guess time will tell.

I can understand that.
I had thought PowerShell was also just a Windows thing, but it looks
like PowerShell is also available on Linux.. These days I tend to like cross-platform tools where possible, so it's encouraging that Microsoft isn't trying to promote another thing that only works on Windows.

Sure, they still want to make a profit, but I see it as being pragmatic. They can't beat open source, but they can increase the odds of people using Windows as part of their development or deployment platform, by making it easier to work with open source.

I have WSL on here, it does seem to work reasonably well, though there's some limitations. One for me is I can't map a Linux sound device to a Windows soundcard, which I wanted to do the other day. You can fiddle around with Pulseaudio, but I'm not sure any of the Linux software I use supports Pulseaudio, it's normally used directly with ALSA devices.

I keep wondering if Microsoft will try to implement something different from the standards to force developers to support Microsoft stuff. I think that's what Microsoft was doing all those years when Internet Explorer 6 was popular and web developers had to support IE6's bugs & idiosyncrasies. Some web sites even only worked well on IE6 and not
very well on other browsers.

Downloads were probably blocked at your job. I'm installing the Linux
subsystem right now. I'll say one thing, downloading anything is a pain in the ass with windows 10. You gotta turn off all the security shit. Edge complains about anything you try and DL and blocks it. Pain in the ass. What causes this? Too many stupid people on the internet?

This is the truth. We do a lot of work with Microsoft and the recurring the I hear when working with MS employees around 40 years of age and up is how different Microsoft is under Satya. Not to say they've got everything right but it's a drastically different place than it was prior to 2015.
