    Hello!

I have a quick question. i'm running synchronet under windows 10 64 bit. I know you can't run most doors unless your running 32bit version but i was wondering can you run 32bit doors though synchronet useing something like dosbox?

32bit stuff should just run, shouldn't it? ;)

I don't think so; passing the door info and a hot comm port into DOSBOX
would be tricky. There's been some effort to build a 3rd party 16-bit DOSVDM called NXVDM (I think) that looks promising.

32-bit Windows doors should run fine on Wnidows 10 64-bit. But if you're talking about DOS doors, those are 16 bit. I thought I heard there was a problem running DOS doors with DOSBox on Windows due to a communications handle or something?

Most doors won't run on windows 10 64bit.... I forget the reasons but it talks about it on the wiki...I was just wondering if someone one had come up with a work around with dosbox or the other vm that was listed. thanks for responding

32 bit doors will work. There are very few 32 bit doors, though.

Most doors are DOS doors which are 16 bit.

There are a few ways they can work, each with a unique level of complexity. A VM might be the best solution; just put an older version of Windows in there, prevent it from updating or talking to the external open internet (i.e., gate it to only be reachable from the host OS), and set up something like GameSrv.

One option which I've tested a bit is installing dosemu in WSL. It works in WSL2, but not original WSL. Networking is a bit tricky though...and I've only tested running 16 bit doors locally that way.

the best thing is to run a 32bit vm. that's just how it is.

As long as you use the right version of DosBOX (0.73) that's not a problem.

Yeah, 32-bit doors work just fine. There just aren't that many.

So did they break something in later versions (i.e. 0.74) where DOS doors no longer work properly with DOSBox on Windows?

Yes. I don't know exactly what but something broke.

That said, I recommend the doornode package - https://github.com/dinchak/doornode - this will get most folks up and running fast.

That looks interesting, might have to test on my Pi. :)

I don't think so; passing the door info and a hot comm port into DOSBOX would be tricky. There's been some effort to build a 3rd party 16-bit DOSVDM called NXVDM (I think) that looks promising.
Since this was posterd I use NXVdm and it works great usualy but once in awhile it gets screwy and I have to uninstall and reinstall it but i'm running a ton of door mostly smoothly for the most part

DosBox uses disk caching so you would likely run into all sorts of problems. There is a version that's been modified but I didn't really get it working.

if you are using dosbox for bbs doorgames and dosgames you want your users to be able to play (like i am), you can set synchronet to only let one user in at a time. right now we wont have a problem with 2 users on at the same time.
