You should talk. Your posts have been pointless since day one and harassing to everyone involved here as well. So get a life and find something productive to do with it instead of wasting your time with your useless jargon. No one cares about what you have to say. You don't own Dove-Net.

If you're in a care home, as I think you've said before, I imagine you're probably behind a firewall, and you'd have to have some ports forwarded to your machine for people to connect to your machine. And if you're using internet service that covers the whole care home, I would imagine it may be difficult to ask them to forward some ports just for you. Also, hopefully the care home you're in also has some form of network security in place.

    shaw cable definitely provides IPv6...

In my part of the world the major providers are Shaw and Telus. Telus provides IPv6 (a dual stack) but Shaw is still IPv4.

My provider at home is Teksavvy. With Teksavvy I can chose to get my service via Telus or Shaw. When I setup with them a while back I opted to use Shaw. Now
    I have no IPv6.

I'm sure Shaw has IPv6 in the works but they haven't rolled it out yet. Something I am hoping will change here soon. I'll have to make another phone call.. :)

that's understandable... i've done it a few times myself :)

again, they didn't find you by your domain... they scan IP number ranges just like war-dialing blocks of phone numbers back in the day... yeah, just like Mathew Broderic did in the movie "War Games" and found NORAD's WOPR computer instead of the game manufacturer(s) they were looking for...

these bots are mostly looking for vulnerable devices they can add to their botnet(s)... they may be used to generate crypto currency or just add to the botnet mass for DDOS, SPAM transmission, and other similar services that someone with control over a lot of machines can sell...

Yup, that is my name and it's also on every script and piece of software I

I forgot to set "close to new users" option to "No" in Scfg. Plus I created Guest / Anonymous account as well. Somehow this user found my domain address and logged on:

it wasn't a "user" it was a script. it scans huge swaths of IP addreses, yours included, and when it finds something open on port 23, it tries to log in with known usernames/passwords for common IOT devices and routers. If it hits a target device (your BBS is not a target device), it will install itself on that device, which will in turn also start scanning huge swaths of IP addresses.

Every single one of us who operate a BBS have dozens and dozens of these connections per day.

We've explained this to you. Quit being so fucking dense.

    1 2 Guest System 09:03 Telnet 1

    180.x.x.x is Saigon.

180.0.0.0/8 is assigned to APNIC, who, in turn, assigns subnets to other organizations all through the Asia Pacific region. Maybe the specific IP that hit you is in Saigon, but there are 16.7 million IP addresses in that range that are spread all through the Asia Pacific region, from Japan, to China, to Austrailia.

Somehow this user found my domain address and logged on:

A user or just a bot? Bots simply scan IP addresses by brute force. If they find your system, it's pure coincidence.

again, they didn't find you by your domain... they scan IP number
ranges just like war-dialing blocks of phone numbers back in the day... yeah, just like Mathew Broderic did in the movie "War Games" and found NORAD's WOPR computer instead of the game manufacturer(s) they were looking for...

    Exactly.

these bots are mostly looking for vulnerable devices they can add to
their botnet(s)... they may be used to generate crypto currency or just add to the botnet mass for DDOS, SPAM transmission, and other similar services that someone with control over a lot of machines can sell...

Yep. BBSs would be of little interest, being "unknown" software to them and appearing to have some semblance of security (regardless of actual security offered).

    Hello Rampage,

In my part of the world the major providers are Shaw and Telus.
Telus provides IPv6 (a dual stack) but Shaw is still IPv4.

    this is from Mar 2019...

    https://support.shaw.ca/t5/internet-discussions/ipv6/td-p/2904

I didn't go to far into that thread but it looks like some folks with the right
modem do have IPv6 support. A good start at least.

I am connected to quite a few folks that use shaw and none of them have IPv6, one uses a tunnel. They'll need to have support in the modem also.

I called my ISP and asked some pointed questions about IPv6. They do support IPv6 on their equipment. I don't get an IPv6 address at home because Shaw hasn't put it on the wire yet, I'm not sure why. The above link tells me they are making a start at providing IPv6 so I think it's just a matter of time before they roll it out to everyone.

I don't really care much for Telus as a company but they have done the right thing with IPv6, I'll give them credit for that.

yes, the modem definitely needs to have it as do the things behind the modem...

for example, my ISP provides IPv6 and my modem supports it... however, i run my
modem in bridge mode so my WAN IP(s) land on my firewall... basically i use their modem as a media convertor... anyway, my firewall doesn't do IPv6 so i don't either... and i'm not paying for a tunnel, either ;)

i can also hear the question(s) about why i use my own firewall... mainly because it is a lot more configurable than anything built into a black box modem/router thing... i've even added numerous apps and capabilities to it that
    others don't even have ;)

It doesnt sound right that it is "modem" related - but problably modem feature related.

There are 2 ways ISP's configure end user equipment - IPoE (aka: standard ethernet protocols), or PPPoE. (That I'm aware of anyway.)

In my case, I am IPoE, so I dont need any special PPPoE config. I just swapped out my ISPs modem for an APU-4 which has opnsense installed - and told it to DHCP on the WAN link - which gives me my IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and LAN prefix.

If I was PPPoE, its a matter of asking for the IPv6 info over an IPv4 request - (which if I needed that read opnsense can handle that - but I just havent tried it. I could though if I set up a VM and do PPPoE to it.)

Yep, the feature set would have to include being able to obtain an IPv6 address in the first place, as well as doing router advertisements.

There are 2 ways ISP's configure end user equipment - IPoE (aka:
standard ethernet protocols), or PPPoE. (That I'm aware of anyway.)

Most I've dealt with have been PPPoE (or PPPoA - PPP over ATM, which can be done on a xDSL modem, but not on an Ethernet only router).

So, if your modem cannot handle the IPv6 requests - you may be able to
put it in bridge mode, and have another downstream device do the DHCP
    or PPPoE requests...

    Yep, that should work.

    Hello alter,

I called my ISP and asked some pointed questions about IPv6. They
do support IPv6 on their equipment. I don't get an IPv6 address
at home because Shaw hasn't put it on the wire yet, I'm not sure
    why. The above

It doesnt sound right that it is "modem" related - but problably modem feature related.

I think my modem supports IPv6. It's a Smart/RG SR808ac. I see in the modems basic settings page "Interface/Prefix" but it says none specified and there is no way to enter anything there.

There are 2 ways ISP's configure end user equipment - IPoE (aka:
standard ethernet protocols), or PPPoE. (That I'm aware of anyway.)

In my case, I am IPoE, so I dont need any special PPPoE config. I just swapped out my ISPs modem for an APU-4 which has opnsense installed -
and told it to DHCP on the WAN link - which gives me my IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and LAN prefix.

I have no setting for any of these things. The only setting I have is for the IP address. I have a choice of DHCP (the default) or I can set a static IP if I
    had one.

If I was PPPoE, its a matter of asking for the IPv6 info over an IPv4 request - (which if I needed that read opnsense can handle that - but
I just havent tried it. I could though if I set up a VM and do PPPoE
    to it.)

I don't think PPPoE is used widely here. Telus's DSL modem may have used it but
it wasn't something a user could choose. I don't have it anymore to look at but
the connection options were the same as I recall. Either DHCP or you could enter a static IP if you had one.

So, if your modem cannot handle the IPv6 requests - you may be able to
put it in bridge mode, and have another downstream device do the DHCP
    or PPPoE requests...

My ISP tells me that IPv6 isn't on the wire here and that is beyond their control, so there isn't much for me to do until that changes.

    Ttyl :-),
    Al

i can also hear the question(s) about why i use my own
firewall... mainly because it is a lot more configurable than
anything built into a black box modem/router thing... i've even
added numerous apps and capabilities to it that others don't even
    have ;)

I do that too, with the 'IPFire' specialized Linux distro. It
runs on a small-form-factor Dell Optiplex with two NICs in it
(green/red). VERY configurable, gets regular updates, and works
perfectly. I've been using this for 12+ years and love it. The
red interface goes to the cable modem, and the green to a decent
gigabit switch, which then feeds all the other devices. Also
connected to that switch are a couple of older Linksys "routers"
running in AP mode to provide WiFi to the house.

I do that too, with the 'IPFire' specialized Linux distro.

IPFire originates from what i use ;)

Ahhh, cool. That one doesn't seem to get updated very often,
and I like the feature set of IPFire better, too. I also used
Smoothwall for a while many years ago... ;-)

i was actually speaking of SWE since it is the original for both
    IPCop and IPFire...

    Ahhh yes, Okay...

if you participated in the SWE forums, you definitely know who i
am... at least by my other/sysop handle, anyway ;)

I wasn't active in the forums that I can remember. I think I only
used SW for a short while, maybe when they were about to
split/fork into SWE, and/or when the IPCop fork took off too. The
timing is a little hazy now...

Just took a quick look and it seems that one (SWE) is not being
updated very well, either... 5+ years is a long time.

Take a look at IPFire! :-)

Yeah, and as the name said, those were perfect. I don't know why
they had to go and change things.

Yes, I always liked WP better, it had good/easy keyboard shortcuts
as I recall. My employer shifted to MS Word and we had no choice
but to use it. Everybody missed WP a lot.

there's only like three of four of us left these days... one man does the brunt of the work updating and building the releases... the rest of us test a little bit and at least one has been working on getting it to compile and boot on an rPI or similar device...

i agree the interface need an uplift but it works... most of the updates these days are bringing it up to more recent kernels but then some of the existing features also need twiddling to get working... i understand there's also some work being done where you could install it like an overlay on a default debian-style linux instead of it being its own flavor of linux... i think devuan is one of the targets... i don't think i want systemd anywhere near my perimeter interface device ;)

When BBS people started connecting to the Internet
and using things like IRC, and pointedly not trying
to adapt to Internet culture but rather force BBS
norms onto the Internet (that didn't happen), I was
watching IRC one time when someone was being a
    particular twit.

back in the mid 90's, there was a particuler script set for ircii that EVERYONE used called "Phoneix". it had a rather large security flaw.

You could send a CTCP command to a client running Phoneix, and they would DCC send you any file on thier system (that their user had permission to send)

So, basically, you could force a user to send you their /etc/passwd file. This was before /etc/shadow was really a thing.

It would happen so quick on the target side, that it was hard to catch, they really had to pay attention to see it, and if the target wasn't very tech savvy, they wouldn't have any real idea what was going on.

Never heard of it. :-) I got off of IRC in the early 90s.
A friend of mine once referred to it as, "the CB radio of

That's not far from the truth. I basically went from the CB Radio to IRC.
