    Shouldn't be much different
    than any other Ubuntu
    derivative.

Has anybody ever ran Kubuntu with Synchronet BBS before?

sure... the KDE interface is very windows-like and makes things easy to handle... it just takes more resources than some other window managers...

FWIW: i generally recommend to not use a GUI on a server... my BBS systems are all run on Ubuntu Server installs... no GUI, CLI only... but i do understand that some folks need a GUI...

I'm sure people have. Kubuntu is no different than any other
    Linux distro, in that regard.

By the way, they just came out a new laptop called the Kubuntu
    Focus. More details here: https://kfocus.org/

    Meh. Looks expensive and gimmicky.

There is always some window manager / desktop environment that uses less resources :). To my surprise Kubuntu worked very well on an old 32-bit 2GB Thinkpad. It doesn't take more resources than Gnome, Mate or Cinnamon and not much more than LXDE. I wouldn't run it on my Raspberry with 1 GB though.

Kubuntu is literally Ubuntu with KDE. Synchronet runs on Ubuntu just fine, and should have no isses with that

I always liked running a low-powered WM like fvwm or twm and keeping a
couple of running log files open in xterms. No need for a full-blown WM, though.

At one point in my career, back when hardware was expensive, I remember my accounting manager running OpenGL screen savers on all of the Windows 2000 servers - and wondering what was hogging the CPU!

I don't think it's a big problem to run a GUI on a server, if the server has plnety of RAM and processor power to handle it. A lighter GUI can be better if you want one. I've heard some people say having more things running means a bigger attack surface for hackers, but if you're just running a server at home for a BBS or even something for personal use, it might not be such a big issue.

I'm running Linux Mint Xfce on my BBS/Plex machine, and it seems to be running okay. I chose the Xfce version of Mint since Xfce is lighter on resources than Cinnamon. The machine I'm running it on has an Intel i5-2500 and 16GB RAM.

Oh yes, I agree on that. I've had an XPS in the past, and have
been using Thinkpads for years, all with Linux. I don't think
I'll ever buy another laptop that *ISN'T* a Lenovo...

I guess my (poorly made) point was that you don't have to buy a
"pre-made" laptop to have it run Linux. It's all freely
downloadable and installable on any laptop that you like. ;-)

Not my original post... I'd say it depends... I thought about setting it up on my desktop, so I could have a local copy working while I'm modding. Trying to keep a local git repo and my bbs sync'd currently and doing some editing in both has been interesting... mostly vscode remote ssh, so I can edit on the server... then copy paste to local repo, so I don't lose stuff.

Not much done yet, so much more to go... Not including any ansi art, but revisiting my mods starting with answer. login is next, which will have several dependencies, then pause, etc..

Something I noticed about OEM linux system is either drivers exist for everything off the shelf, or they will provide the drivers for download. If you're buying a linux ready desktop or laptop, you eliminate having to fuss with kludges and hacks to get features to work.

A decade (or more) ago, that may have been true. Nowadays, any
Linux distro I've tried (a lot of them) have worked flawlessly on
a wide variety of hardware that I've used.

In other words, I think it'd be hard to find something that
    *ISN'T* Linux-ready.

Fair enough. It's been a decade since I run into flakey drivers or had to jump through hoops to load a driver. Broadcomm drivers were notorious for having
to be hunted down manually loaded after the automated installation process ended. In general, hardware has also gotten better in cheaper laptops.Regardless, you know if an OEM suggests a laptop or desktop to run lin ux on, it's probably the model they had the least headaches with.

That's been my experience of late. Most I've had to do in recent times with randomly selected hardware is allow the installation of "non free" drivers
