I don't understand the question. In general, your questions and comments seem to be too vague to be understood or replied to in any meaningful way.

yes they are but a lot of work to go through 825 lines it being the biggest modifiable file in synchronet bbs alone which keeps growing every year by the way as well too. if you do it the quickie way you can have it down in about 5-10 mins but if you comb through it thoroughly it can take days because your eyesget tired of looking at those lines after awhile.

I don't think it really needs to. And you can always change it to suit what you want for your BBS.

Ever use search and replace feature of a text editor? You could do a global search and replace of ^AY (yellow) with ^AM (magenta) in a few seconds. Or you could get smarter with regular expressions or common tools like sed.

In any case, you asked about a "color makeover" - how would that help sysops that want to change all the colors in the text.dat?

that's all part of being a sysop and modifying your BBS... there's other ways to handle it than editing the text.dat file, too...

but if one is editing the text.dat, they can also use other tools to make the job easier... diff and patch come to mind... then one only needs to add the new modified lines to the patch when needed...

You shouldn't have to do that more than once though, when you customize your BBS. So I don't think that's a really big deal. And when new lines are added, I usually use a diff program (I like WinMerge) to compare mine and the stock version, and then bring the changes into mine. Usually, the changes are more lines added at the bottom, but I've seen times where some of the other lines are changed. I just merged changes from the stock text.dat last night, and some of the lines had "..." replaced with @ELLIPSIS@.

He picked those colors because that's what he wanted to use on his BBS. I don't think Digital Man is going to mainain a separate copy of the file for other sysops.

At any rate, why are you so focused on the stock colors in text.dat? As has been said before, you can change them to whatever you want for your BBS.

yes they are but a lot of work to go through 825 lines it being the biggest modifiable file in synchronet bbs alone which keeps growing every year by the way as well too. if you do it the quickie way you can have it down in about 5-10 mins but if you comb through it thoroughly it can take days

it's only hard if you have no ability. i created a colorized text.dat for most ansi colors using a text replacement program. took minutes.

not only THAT, but you can replace any text string on the fly in your command shell. you dont need to edit text.dat

not only THAT, but you can replace any text string on the fly in your command shell. you dont need to edit text.dat

But if you want a consistent look, it's probably better to modify text.dat so your command shell (or multiple command shells, if you have more than one) don't have to all change those strings.

Okay, a question on text.dat ... how does one access the text.dat for use in a js script? I'd like to add some custom enteries to use with the dup_user_check.js a threw together.

I do see that, say, using confirm("Delete User?); in js.global.console mode (running script via ;exec while logged onto the BBS) outputs a colorized Y/n string ...

no, i meant you can replace individual text.dat lines in your command shell

the following are the commands that illustrate what you and i are referring to.

    --begin baja docs--
    *REPLACE_TEXT <#> <"cstr">
    args: num text
    *-------------------------
This function is used to replace a default internal text string (read from the CTRL\TEXT.DAT file) in a shell or module. The first argument (num) is the text number to replace (see TEXT.DAT for the number of the text you wish to replace). The second argument (text) is the C type string to use in place the current one. All text replacements are lost (back to default TEXT.DAT) when the user logs off. Example, to replace the "[Hit a key]" prompt with a different string:

    REPLACE_TEXT 563 "\1n\1h\1b{\1wPAUSE\1b} "

When replacing a TEXT.DAT string that contains %s, %d, or other % specifiers, you will need to change them to %%s, %%d, etc (without changing the order).

If you wish to globally replace a string (for all shells and modules), you may want to just edit the CTRL\TEXT.DAT file directly instead.

    *LOAD_TEXT <"str">
    args: filename
    *-------------------
Loads an alternate TEXT.DAT file (from CTRL directory, automatically assuming
a .DAT extension for "filename"). Only those text items that are different
from the current TEXT items will be changed. All changes will only be in
effect until the current user logs off or the effects are reversed with the REVERT_TEXT function. The base filename should be something other than just "TEXT" (since that is the default TEXT.DAT that is loaded by SBBS).

This function is useful for making multiple languages available to your users.

    *REVERT_TEXT <# or ALL>
    args: num
    *----------------------
This function is used to reverse the effects of a previous call to REPLACE_TEXT or LOAD_TEXT (reverts back to default TEXT.DAT). Example:

    REPLACE_TEXT 563 "\1n-=[Hit a Key]=- "
    PAUSE
    REVERT_TEXT 563

If the argument is the word ALL, then all text strings are reverted to the original TEXT.DAT entries.
