• Compiles but SSH / TLS still segfaults

From Fat Rastus@VERT/EWBBS to All on Friday, July 12, 2019 13:26:44
I downloaded a fresh copy of sbbs src and it compiles without any issues, however if any TLS / SSH is enabled sbbs crashes at startup. The last code I can run is from early in the day on 6/3/19 before all the changes to cryptlib where implemented.

If Cryptlib version 3.4.5 incompatable as patched, then where do I go from here? I had been trying to get some help in another message but so far no one has offered any useful assistance.

Is anyone else running a currect ssh build with SSH / TLS on Ubuntu 18.04 32bit?

    Thanks,

    Nicholas

    Ubuntu 18.04 64-bit, not 32-bit. <shrug>

The cryptlib mailing list is here:
    cryptlib-request@mbsks.franken.de

Maybe they'll have more tips or suggestions, though, through my experience Deuce is quicker to find/fix issues than the cyryptlib author is. You can find Deuce in #synchronet at irc.synchro.net. Not here.

After doing some more reading, it would seem that cryptlib 3.4.5 isn't working on the ubuntu 32bit platform.. and yes, this box runs an i686 kernel.

There is a simular issue with Mystic BBS and they recommend using an older version of cryptlib, which DM suggested I try, but unfortunately that is not an option since the older library can't be patched and the build fails.

I've been running, and upgrading, ubuntu 32bit on this box since 2010. It would be a major undertaking to migrate to a new platform and I don't have the time nor the motivation to do so now. If it were just the BBS I'd do it.. but this box runs other servers as well... Oh well.. 32bit OS are dying off and I knew that sooner or later I'd have to migrate.. in this case it will be later...

Yes, it might be helpful to change architecture.. and my BBS runs on a Digital Ocean Droplet VPS (KMV). I am not sure what is causing the issue.. it could be many things.. since the error is an illegal opcode..it could be an issue with the VM. Migrating to a new OS is an option.. but I'd like to be reasonably sure that it's the correct workaround...

I have been seeing a lot of discussion lately about VMs, and many OSes, discontinuing 32bit support, since 32bit strict CPU's are deprecated (though I still have an ancient 386 MMX with win3.11 mainboard sitting around collecting dudt LOL)

how much are you willing to spend? you can get an ovh soyoustart server for pretty cheap. also hetzner does server auctions.

i would suggest installing proxmox on a dedi with decent muscle and memory and making some vms for your various needs.

Yes, that is an option... but I've been waiting for, and am excited to see the new encryption features for some time..

Over the weekend I setup two Ubuntu 18.04.2 VM's.. One running 32bit the other 64it.. I installed synchronet from CVS on both... the 64bit VM ran as expected, however, while sbbs built successfully, it crashed with the error (illegal opcode) on the 32bit install.

So, now that I know the issue is definately related to an incombatibly issue with cryptlib 3.4.5 on the 32bit OS, I am more confortable migrating to a new server as I didn't want to migrate until I was certain it was a fix.
