Indians usually say "take" rather than "eat" or "drink". Might be a Britishism too.

Another Indianism: they say "I have a doubt about ..." rather than "I have a question about ...".

It takes some getting used to, but Indians easier to understand (on average) than the Chinese. I so wished I'd learned Mandarin long ago. Would have beeen good for my career.

Every culture has its quirks, even when they speak the same language. We have more than our share here in Australia, and then Aborigines have their own interesting twist on English. For example, they use "deadly" to mean "really good", and "mob" means tribal or ancestral group.

It takes some getting used to, but Indians easier to understand (on average) than the Chinese. I so wished I'd learned Mandarin long ago. Would have beeen good for my career.

Indeed. Today, the school where I work has regular classes in Mandarin for students, which I think will give those kids a head start, especially if they pursue a career in international trade or diplomacy.

Now that you mention it, I've studied Portuguese a bit, and Portuguese speakers (at least Brazilian Portuguese) is the same way on both counts, the use of "take" for meals, and having a "doubt" rather than a question. Though, the verb "to eat" and the word "question" both exist in Portuguese.

It takes some getting used to, but Indians easier to understand (on average) than the Chinese. I so wished I'd learned Mandarin long ago. Would have beeen good for my career.

Mandarin would be useful to know.. Though for software development, there have been maybe only one or two times for me it probably could have been helpful. Overall I can't say it has been critical. For business, I think much of the world tends to learn English anyway.

Yeah, I talk to people from India quite a lot where I work. I actually haven't noticed them say "take" rather than "eat" very often, but one thing I've noticed is they often use the present-continuous tense (for instance, instead of saying "I have a computer", they'd say "I am having a computer"), and often it doesn't sound quite right to me.

i've seen a lot of indian men be mean towards women in the workplace and out in the world.

one time an indian guy came into a mcdonalds while i was waiting in line and he was screaming at the poor girl because his coffee was cold. i can't believe mcdonalds coffee would be cold.

anyways, more yelling and he was holding up the line and i said 'hey, can you wait on me before dealing with this guy?' and she said yes happily. he then walked up and looked at me head to toe like i was shit and turned i gave him a look back.

now i'm a big guy and i could shake him around like a rag doll so
he finally shut the fuck up.

    Some are very timid.
Also the indian men are obsessed with sex.

they are very into hispanic women especially ones with big butts.
Put on a shakira video, or nikki manoj, or take them to a brazillian steak house where the female staff all have butt implants they go nuts.

They also find american baseball hilarious. Cricket is very serious for them, but when they watch american baseball they laugh at stuff like when the runner at first takes a lead off and then the pitcher throws to first and he rushes back.

    They find that humorous.

It is a well known fact that Indians cheat at anything, at any chance they get, including education. Google pictures of family and friends scaling walls of universities to give answers to students. It's insane. They look for the shortcuts for everything in life.

In india its all about status and class. One guy told me he never changed a lightbulb until he moved to the US because at home "we pay people to do tasks that are beneath us".

They spend horrendous amounts of money to have things done in their homes and repairs on their cars, because they feel doing that work themselves is below them. They don't see it how americans do, that independence and ability to survive is what its all about. Skills.

I've heard from some that parents in India often want their children to be a doctor or engineer, so a lot of their colleges are filled with students trying to get into those programs, and their colleges are very competitive. I was reading somewhere that they have so many people trying to get into those programs that they don't have enough people for other jobs they need, such as garbage haulers, cleaners, and various other jobs and work that society needs.

One was also once telling me that service and infrastructure stuff in India (such as electricity, water, internet, etc.) isn't as reliable as in the US, and sometimes it can be out for a couple days or so while they wait for someone to fix it.

homes and repairs on their cars, because they feel doing that work themselves is below them. They don't see it how americans do, that independence and ability to survive is what its all about. Skills.

I've had a few tell me they would die in a few days if left or trapped somewhere. And I believe it.

Quite a different culture. Here, we're very much about having a go at things, but in a different way - mateship. We look after each other, but still instill a sense of independence, because one never knows when they're going to have to support their mates - famously, in battle, but also in everyday life.

It is a well known fact that Indians cheat at anything, at any chance they get, including education. Google pictures of family and friends scaling walls of universities to give answers to students. It's insane. They look for the shortcuts for everything in life.

In india its all about status and class. One guy told me he never changed a lightbulb until he moved to the US because at home "we pay people to do

    yeah people are just weird.

i'm with an arab woman and even though her family members own businesses, they steal benefits. also they won't deal with anybody who isnt arab, nor will they talk to them. i have to drop her off at down the block when she visits because it's an insult for me to show up with her.

they said something is wrong with me because i swore on the phone when i was on speakerphone but they swear too. i love busting their balls and say "what is wrong with this person, they swear too much".

bunch of hypocrites who refuse to conform to our american society.

I've heard from some that parents in India often want their children to be a doctor or engineer, so a lot of their colleges are filled with students trying to get into those programs, and their colleges are very competitive. I was reading somewhere that they have so many people trying to get into those programs that they don't have enough people for other jobs they need, such as garbage haulers, cleaners, and various other jobs and work that

i think they basically buy their degrees in some cases. i've met a lot of indians that really arent worth their salt.

One was also once telling me that service and infrastructure stuff in India (such as electricity, water, internet, etc.) isn't as reliable as in the US, and sometimes it can be out for a couple days or so while they wait for someone to fix it.

oh yeah, that's what i've heard too.

Yes, basically if you're a male in india you're either going to be an engineer or a doctor. A few sub categories fall under each.

It is so competetive, that they CHEAT all the time on their tests. In fact, its so bad the cheating, that they don't even really acknowledge it anymore.

There are pix on the net of family and friends climbing walls of colleges to give their family members and friends answers.

Remember that the next time you go to your indian doctor, or get code from an offshore team.

It seems even a lot of females in India go to get engineering/technical degrees. One thing I've noticed in my field is that it seems there are very few American women in technology, but there are a lot of women from India (along with men from India) in the industry..

How did they get jobs in the US? Does your company recruit them?

I don't know all of their stories, so I can only guess.. They could have been already living in the US or have work visas sponsored by the company. I've actually heard some debate about the company sponsoring a lot of H1B visas, whether true or not and whether people think that's a good thing or not.. It seems to me that at least some of them were already living here and went to college in the US. Perhaps at least some of them just immigrated to the US at some point, like anyone else from any other country. There was also an intern who was on our team a couple years ago, and I think one of her parents was from India, who moved to the US some time ago.

I was just curious. In my area many people from India become Doctors. I know how they get here. Government grants for medical school. It's a burden for me because I don't understand a word they say. Even when they speak English. I'm not comfortable with that at all. I feel I have a right to understand what my Doctor is saying. If I have to go to the ER it's hard to find an MD I can communicate with. It's bad enough they have no "bedside" manors but you would think with all the schooling they would lose the accent. Even if just a

Some, I can understand, and some I can't. Years ago, I got a call from a job recruiter who had an Indian accent so thick I couldn't understand him at all. After repeating to him that I couldn't understand him, he hung up..
