Perhaps, (I'm only guessing) he's suggesting that some kind of detection should happen on the first page...
If you connect with http, you redirect automatically to the https version of the site...

The Synchronet Web Server and my various instances (e.g. vert.synchro.net, www.synchro.net, etc.) already support TLS (https://).

Then your browser doesn't try HTTPS first, and his server doesn't automatically bounce you from HTTP to HTTPS. It doesn't mean HTTPS is unavailable. :|
On my site I just redirect all HTTP to HTTPS. Rob may or may not want to do that. There is some risk of breaking third party things that download or mirror stuff via HTTP and don't handle HTTPS or redirection well (though really that's their problem).

I appreciate the TLS support! I have AlleyCat! running on a separate system on Port 81, I have my main Apache Web Server setup for virtual hosts and redirects alleycat.synchro.net requests to https://alleycat.synchro.net:443, though most browsers report an invalid security certificate, it is easy to add an exception to the browser.

You can get a valid certificate from LetsEncrypt: http://wiki.synchro.net/module:letsyncrypt

Suspect he's like most users who think the website will default to https automatically, which a lot do these days, but the majority of web ops who couldn't give a rats ass about Google Analytics probably don't bother.
Of course you could easily get a nice Chrome extension that tries https by default at every site you visit...

hell, i've seen where whois had special code added to it becuase folks were doing things like
whois http://www.google.com/foo/bar/
which was not a valid domain name since it contained the protocol and other slashes... they were simply cutting the domain out
of their browser bar and pasting it onto the whois command line without editing out the other fluff'n'schtuff...

I'm glad that you haven't been able to validate that - anyone doing that
a whois client needs to have a big rejection message sent their way. Yikes...

Depending on the way a Synchronet BBS is configured, the pipe symbol next to the 'm' there could be interpreted as a color code for magenta (Renegade?).
I noticed because I have those color codes enabled in my Synchronet configuration, so the 'm' was missing and the rest of your message was magenta..

I added the timed event as shown on the wiki, and edited the letsyncrypt.ini
Host=acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org
Directory=/directory
TOSAgreed=true
[Domain]
alleycat.synchro.net=/sbbs/etrucker
[key_id] acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org=https://acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org/acme /acct/51915535
when the even runs I get:
6/24 09:53:26a Semaphore signaled for Timed Event: SYNCRYPT
6/24 09:53:26a Running timed event: SYNCRYPT
6/24 09:53:26a ERROR 2 (No such file or directory) (WinError 2) in exec.cpp line 610 (sbbs_t::js_execfile) opening "C:\sbbs\exec\letsyncrypt.js" access=0
6/24 09:53:26a Timed event: SYNCRYPT returned -1
I had changed the Directory=/sbbs/etrucker to no avail
Any ideas?

Odd, it was in/sbbs/exec/load but there was a file /sbbs/exec/letsyncrypt.js.0 so I deleted it and moved the one in /sbbs/exec/load to /sbbs/exec and force ran the event ... it returned 0 ... I also deleted /sbbs/ctrl/ssl.cert but I am still getting a certificate error :-/

My letsyncrypt.js file date is June 10, 2019 size 8kb, the revision is not noted within the file, just noticed, though that the letsyncrypt.key is file date February 20,2019, likely the culprit :-/
