• File request support standard in FreqIT/BinkIT

From Va7aqd@VERT/VA7AQDS to All on Saturday, June 01, 2019 13:28:58
    Hi all,

I haven't been able to find the information around what type of file and file update requests BinkIT/FreqIT support. According to FTS-0005.003, the types could be:

XA Bark and WaZOO file/update requests
XB Bark file/update requests, WaZOO file requests
XC Bark file requests, WaZOO file file/update
    XP Bark file/update requests
XR Bark and WaZOO file requests
    XW WaZOO file requests
    XX WaZOO file/update requests

When browsing the Fidonet nodelist, I see one other Synchronet system listed with XX, but I don't want to ask to be listed any particular way without knowing more about it.

I have done things like grepped the entire source for bark & wazoo and haven't found anything, so I'm left a little confused about it.

    Thanks!

    XX WaZOO file/update requests

BinkIT/FreqIT supports the Binkley method of file requests (defined in FTS-5005) over BinkP (defined in FTS-1026 and FSP-1024).

This is what FTS-1026 has to say about the nodelist flags:

The binkp 1.0 protocol does not define file requests, however
there are implementations that support Wazoo file requests.
Therefore most systems running a binkp 1.0 implementation should
not carry any request flags in the nodelist.

(seems like a contradiction to me, but whatever)

And then FSP-1024 (BinkP 1.1) says this about nodelist flags:

Because the protocol allows multiple batches, the implementation
can be made so to honor WaZoo file requests, ie respond to files
    named NNNNMMMM.REQ when received.

If a implementation includes WaZoo requests and the sysop running
the system allows file request, the nodelist request flag to use
is XX if file requests and update requests are allowed, or XW if
    only file requests are allowed.

Based on that, I'm guessing "XW" would be appropriate. But I'm no expert on this FREQ/Wazoo/Bark stuff.

Thanks muchly for the details, I appreciate it, and I expect you're likely correct. I just came across some very old information that talks about the Wazoo stuff being built in to BinkleyTerm, and I presume somewhere down the line things continued to evolve. Could spend some time tracing down the old specs I suppose.

I'll suggest we use XW and see how things go.
