Can you verify at your TB console for errors?
I was never able to get TB to display anything bit I was recently
playing around with Claw Mail and it logs everything.
Occasionally I see this which causes the client to hang:

I dont have access to check SBBS logs currently but something
is going on there. I will have to run smbutil and make sure I dont
have any errors.

The problems described above "inside the synchronet server" are of course actually in nntpservice.js (not Synchronet) and were fixed 14 years ago:
