• SBBS on ReactOS?

From Jagossel@VERT/DISCREAL to All on Thursday, February 07, 2019 14:00:00
Has anyone tried to see if it was possible to run Synchronet within
ReactOS? I know that ReactOS isn't ready for major uses (when will they
ever?) and has been lkke that for years. I'm just curious to see if it is
even remotely possible with where ReactOS now.

I'm kind of impressed that they're still at it. I remember messing around with that like ... I want to say 15 years ago, but maybe it was only 10.

I know it's been brought up before, but I don't remember if anyone actually tried running Sync on it or how it went. Worth giving it a shot, even if I'm not sure if there's any good reason to do it. :D

There was a discussion on that on Dove-Net not too long ago. I seem to remember someone setting up ReactOS to see how well Synchronet would run, and I seem to remember he said there were a few issues. I think there was a problem with the 16-bit DOS subsystem that made it difficult/impossible to run 16-bit DOS doors. I think he said there were a few other minor issues as well.

I started following ReactOS about 10-12 years ago, and I'm both surprised and not surprised at how slow its development has been. I heard ReactOS has been around since the mid 90s (and originally started as a project to replicate Windows 95). In that sense, I'm surprised it's still considered 'beta' and they haven't released a totally stable version yet. Linux is also open-source and matured much faster than ReactOS, but I can see how ReactOS would be more of a challenage. On the other hand, as a totally volunteer project, I suppose you couldn't really count on it making fast progress.

Another open-source OS I've been curious about is Haiku OS, which aims to reproduce BeOS, which is no longer developed.

I know it's been brought up before, but I don't remember if anyone actually tried running Sync on it or how it went. Worth giving it a shot, even if I'm not sure if there's any good reason to do it. :D

Ya'll just brought back my nightmares from 2000 when I installed reactos and sbbs 2.3 and sbbs 3 ... reactos failed for both ... I am surprised react is still alive if that's what one wants to call it ...

I'd like to see someone port sbbs to android pc when it gets a little further along :-)

they say they are just alpha.
i've been following it since the beginning and they have very slow development and i have found it disappointing.

Just for SAG I installed ReactOS in Virtualbox 5.2 and got sbbs317b working without any problems, though I did not bother setting it up on vert, but it ran 'ok' and also got LORD4.06 installed and working ....

I installed the latest ReactOS 4.10 today, it seems to have many features and apps available. It also has a kinda 'store' to get other programs, so I grabbed FireFox 48 and upgraded to Firefox 52 right away, as well as installed the ms runtime modules from Microsoft, and SBBS v 3.17b ... not that I would use React or anything, was just curious

I was about to myself, but I didn't get very far (due to time). I have a
busy weekend ahead of me this weekend; I doubt I'll get to that expirement anytime soon.

    I only gotten as far as setting up the VM on my personal VM "server";
didn't get to install ReactOS yet.

I've seen screenshots on their web site of it running more than that. I think it can run some web browsers and maybe even a few games. But still, I don't think it's in a good enough state to use on a daily basis either.

I have it installed in a Virtualbox running sbbs317b; seems to run a lot of stuff, but, yeah, I wouldn't use it for much more than helping support the dev/testing
