• Internal Codes limited to 8chars

From Michael Borthwick@VERT to All on Saturday, February 02, 2019 13:40:44
    Howdy,

Setting up all my fido sub boards and finding the internal code (which I understand to be the echo tag?) is limited to 8 characters and having special characters removed.

For example Z1_ROUTING is being changed to Z1ROUTIN

I'm importing the list from a .na file.

How does one get scfg to set the internal code to the code from the .na file?

    Cheers!

Ah so let me get this right, the internal code in scfg is a code only for Synchronet. Synchronet keeps the echo tag seperate and links them when you export the .bbs file. So it really doesn't matter what's in the internal code in scfg.... I think :)

No, the echo tag (or area tag) is not the same thing as the internal (to Synchronet) code.

For example Z1_ROUTING is being changed to Z1ROUTIN

I'm importing the list from a .na file.

That's expected. All you really care about internal codes is that they are unique. You can have up to 16 characters for an internal code when you combine a code prefix (for the message group) with the sub-boards internal code suffix. But FidoNet echo tags can be up to 35 characters in length and are thus imported into different fields in SCFG.

How does one get scfg to set the internal code to the code from the .na file?

Just import the .na file, then export to areas.bbs (for SBBSecho to use) and it'll all be good.

Internal codes are only relevant on a particular BBS. The echotag actually corresponds to the short name of the area in Synchronet.

Correct, the only thing that matters is that each internal code is unique. Using a group prefix can help avoid dupes across different nets.

Yes, I've given the import feature a real workout over the last couple of years. Love it. :)

    This is true.

    The echotag actually
corresponds to the short name of the area in Synchronet.

This is not always true. Technically, the only place the echo/area tag needs to be correct is in the areas.bbs file. When importing echo lists into SCFG, echo tags longer than 25 characters are actually imported into the sub-boards "newsgroup name" field. When exporting from SCFG to an areas.bbs file, the echo tag written to the areas.bbs file can come from either the short name or the newsgroup name (if there is one) - so that longer echo tags can be imported-into and exported-out-of SCFG intact.

Ahh ok, interesting to know. That's a clever way of doing things too. :)
