    Tony,

Good idea. :) I use the FTP service to allow anonymous downloads. Uploads a V>restricted, as pretty much all of my files come via file echos.

Right now, I don't allow uploads except for Verified Users In Good
Standing. I also changed the file areas for New, Unverified, or Guest
users to just file board 1, file area 1...dealing with information
files on the BBS. To see the rest of the file areas, via FTP, the
website, or telnet, one has to be logged on.

I used to have a majority of the areas available to all...but I got a
ton of information requests looking for photo.scr and info.zip (both
malware), or they tried to upload both. So, I blocked the web browser
anonymous FTP logons. So, because of the malware search and attempted
uploads of same, I don't have all the file areas available to "Guests".

When these messages show up, inquiring about those malware files, are
they attempting to upload them, or just looking to see if those exist??
I did notice that in some searches for the private uploads area (where
files are scanned before being put online for download), SBBS said
    "empty directory (no access)".

I really would like to make the majority of file areas available again
for anonymous FTP. I'm running SBBS 3.17b -- and did the last data
update on Jan. 19 with sbbs_dev.zip and sbbs_run.zip

I set up a guest account with unlimited time, I made it so people can download then set flags that keeps the guest account from uploading or posting on Dove-net.

I only allow uploads in "Uploads to Sysop", but only I have download access there, so it can't be used to spread malware.

I'm not to worried about restricting downloads, as long as malware can't be uploaded.

What are you using to scan your files for malware and computer viruses?

    Tony,

I'm not to worried about restricting downloads, as long as malware can't be TL>uploaded.

The one thing that concerns me is that in the FTP deal, at times, I
see searches for photo.scr and info.zip (both malware), and not sure if
they try to upload that or not.

Right now, I have the email addresses for Google Chrome, Internet
Explorer, and Firefox in the email.can file, which disallows these from accessing FTP. I'd like to re-enable those, but only the "BBS
Information Files" area (info on the BBS) is available to Guest Users
right now...yet I'd like to re-enable several other areas for anonymous
FTP. However, as the first paragraph of my reply notes, that's keeping
    me from doing such.

    Tony,

wait, what?? anonymous can upload but not download? you're extremely brave to allow anonymous uploads... when they find you, they'll eat you alive...

That's a great way to get a board full of malware. Might work for a malware TL>collecting honeypot. ;)

    I can see it now...

Download your malware here...we don't scan anything. :P
