• Synchronet and Win 10? Prudent or not?

    I assume the new version of Synchronet just released is fine for Windows 10...but the docs say Win 7...

    but figured I'd ask before doing a full install of SBBS.

    Thanks

    Yes. Which docs are you referring to?

    The FILE_ID.DIZ says:
    Synchronet v3.17b Internet BBS Software
    for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10.

    and install.rtf file:

    Synchronet BBS Software for Win32 v3.17b
    This version is expected to be compatible with the following MicrosoftO operating systems (both 32-bit/x86 and 64-bit/x64 flavors, though 32-bit is preferred for 16-bit DOS program compatibility):

    * Windows XP SP3 or later
    * Windows Server 2003 SP3 or later or R2
    * Windows Server 2008 SP2 or later or R2
    * Windows Vista SP2 or later
    * Windows 7
    * Windows 8
    * Windows 10

    Thanks..I guess I did not dig enough...I have a few HD's with the 'back
    in the day' windows 10 free stuff....so figured I'd try that for ease of
    use.

    Again, will use newest synchronet just up as front end to tcp/ip or
    whatever to mbbs/wg/various other gamer boxes..all on a static ip

    supposedly you can do this kinda thing with dosbox and oracle vm and xp
    (dos box and wg and mbbs)

    but figure I better put up the 'hardware' first and try to remember how
    to run these toys from the 90's thru 2009 when the whole cluster was
    taken down and stored away..(I have forgotten much about dos etc...the
    horror of having to remember that and windows 3.11nt ..shudder)

    I'll post stuff as I am sure I will have more questions

    Rob,

    The FILE_ID.DIZ says:

    for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10.

    With the end of security updates for Windows 7 in January, 2020...I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows 10 32-bit sometime this spring, if
    things work out.

    I know I'll have to reinstall everything (I'll be sure I make backups <G>)...but the one thing that bothers me is that I've heard that it will
    do updates and reboots "at the worst times".

    Since you're a fellow ham radio operator (I'm WX1DER), I know that you
    don't want the system rebooting during a ham radio net, or if the BBS is
    in use. Basically, is there a way to "disable" the automatic updates,
    then do them manually?? Right now, when I do updates with Windows 7, it
    can take 90 minutes to download and install everything, then do its
    reboot.

    Thanks, Rob. When I'm done with my tasks, then I can do the updates.

    Someone suggested I go to Mac, and get a Windows emulator, but so much
    of my stuff is with Windows...and I really don't have the desire to
    learn a new OS.
