From Mansion@VERT/FLUXCAP to All on Monday, October 29, 2018 08:24:00
anybody try the "Windows Sub-system for Linux"

I tried installing Synchronet in both debian and ubuntu apps,
    in debian, it failed miserably
I also tried installing installing mystic both 32 & 64 bit versions and gave error.

in ubuntu, I got allot further along, but ports below 1024 fail.
I did manage to login once and got all the way to creating the user, and it failed.

    installing mystic however worked perfectly

any ideas on what to try with sbbs ??
anyway to disable all ports/listeners except telnet?

    Thanks,

    Michael2

Remove the port assignments in sbbs.ini and comment out the entries in services.ini ?

    Yes, in the ctrl/sbbs.ini file.

It can. See http://wiki.synchro.net/monitor:syslog for details.

I was running via console (sudo ./sbbs)

Then you should also have seen the log output on the console.

I did manage to get it working, I had to chmod 777 and chown all files & directorys within sbbs

    Okay, glad you sorted it.

on linux, sbbs sends its log output to the system syslog... you have to look in
    there...

    eg: sudo egrep -e " synchronet: " /var/log/syslog

the part in quotes that grep is looking for is determined by your sbbs.ini [UNIX] section's LogIdent definition...

I was running via console (sudo ./sbbs) I did manage to get it
working, I had to chmod 777 and chown all files & directorys within
    sbbs

ewww! that's not right... not at all... that's quite dangerous, AAMOF...

664 sbbs:sbbs is all that's needed... sbbs:sbbs being the user and group... if you have other tools, like binkd for instance, they should be in the same group, at least, so they can write the files to the inbound directories and send them from the outbound ones... i generally set all sync related tools to the same user:group as sbbs is running under...

tried it daemonized and the only log file is in data/logs/103018.log
tried it ./sbbs syslog no change

am pretty sure windows it has to do with the windows sub-system
as there is *no* syslog, dmesg, its very minimal

but, it does sort of work :-)

I know but even "root" could not access my files until I opened the permissions.

WSL is "alpha" at best, even though Micro$haft has put the app on the store

there is no "syslog" in /var/log

You should get the syslog issue sorted out so you have the log output. If you're running in Windows (e.g. sbbsctrl.exe), the log output goes into the different forms/Windows for each server and services and can be copy/pasted from there.

sort of - WSL is basicly a bastardize virtual image

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/faq

Windows Subsystem for Linux (Windows 10)
right now you can run debian, ubuntu, kali,
    opensuse and Suse Linux debian.
You install an app via the windows
store which installs a bare system, then
    you build from there

Someone recently asked if Synchronet would build in that environment. I don't remember if I tried myself, but it's cool to know it built for someone else. Though, if you're already running Windows, I'd probably to choose the Windows build myself. Still, it's an interesting experiment.

WSL? is that that thing where m$ has allowed some sort of linux stuff on winwhatever?

there is no "syslog" in /var/log

maybe it is "messages"? on one of my systems, the system log is /var/log/messages... on the server systems, it is /var/log/syslog with various others as well... some info duplicated in some cases... syslog may be a debian-based thing... i dunno... the one system that uses "messages" is definitely not a debian system... it originally started as a redhat thing and very quickly morphed to being its own distribution thing...
