Does that other message have the same subject? Because of inconsistent threading data (on networked messages in particular) I also group messages with the same subject line into the same thread. When I don't do this, messages that are *clearly* part of the same thread appear in separate threads because some other linking data is missing. IMHO this helps more than it harms, and messages with the same topic are kinda sort part of the same "thread" anyway.

Side benefit: CVS commit messages about a particular file end up in the same thread.

Yeah, that's weird. They're supposed to be sorted by the date of the newest message in the thread. I'll see if I can figure that one out.

Yes, it was the same "test" subject. Just odd since I replied to the
whole newsgroup instead of anyone in that thread. Don't want anyone
coming down on me for reviving old threads. :)

When they do, tell them that I told you to tell them to eat shit. It's not like we're drowning in chatter here. Raise the dead, maybe it'll start a conversation about necromancy. (I'm only kind of joking; necroposting is one thing, expecting a reply from OP ten years later is often unrealistic.)

Regarding your mis-sorted messages, I see what the problem is (and it's not anything wrong with the web UI). If you look in the first of those threads on your BBS, you'll see that the penultimate message has a date in the distant future: Sat Feb 6 22:28:15 2106. That makes the newest message in that thread newer than anything else in that sub on your BBS.

I'm not sure what tools we have for fixing stuff like that; I can write a quick script if you want to change that date, or you could delete the message. I assume the other threads at the top have similar problems.

I've seen that on my BBS sometimes too, where on ecweb, the messages at the top are older ones.

The order in which threads are listed is governed by the newest message anywhere in each thread. The date of the *last* (highest-numbered) message in a thread isn't necessarily what determines this (but it usually is). If any message in a thread has a newer 'when written time' than any other message in the sub, then its thread is listed above the rest, and so on.

(So you can check those threads and see if any message has a weird date in the future or something.)

I don't really see a problem with reviving an old thread, if you have something new to ask or contribute. People often seem to react like reviving an old thread is against the law or something..

Agree, some old threads are worth continuing, so revive away, as far as I'm concerned. :)
