Wiki edit of http://wiki.synchro.net/wiki:user:digital_man by digital man: I guess I'll call this page a blog
I enjoyed reading this. I pretty much agree with what you say here about BBSes. There have been discussions on Dove-Net on how people might want to make BBSes more popular again, by making specialized mobile apps for accessing BBSes etc., but I'm not sure how well that would work, and we don't necessarily need to make BBSes more popular again. And I find it interesting that, as you've said, users and sysops back in the day would have wanted to move forward with things like AOL/CompuServe/Prodigy and other online services, whereas now, we in the BBS community tend to be nostalgic and fascinated with the old ANSI text interface.
Yup. And there's nothing necessarily "wrong" with that. And we can have both old and new tech (e.g. a nice Web UI and a good terminal experience). For example, I try to make sure Synchronet still works/looks nicely with non-ANSI terminals, yet, there are probably very few users that actually have/use them. Its part of the enjoyment for me.
My main point was that the lack of new-tech or accessiblity to BBSes isn't necessarily a problem for a lot of us. I glad you agree. :-)
