• Areafix %-ALL

From Al@VERT/TRMB to Digital Man on Saturday, August 11, 2018 11:52:06
    Hello Digital Man,

I have a couple points here that have been used for testing that I haven't used in some time so I removed them from the config here, first sending a %-All message to areafix. Those points were removed from the areas as expected.

I also have another point here that isn't a test point, it belongs to someone who polls regularly for mail. That point was also removed from all but one area. Is it possible that removing test point 757.1 and 757.2 with %-ALL also removed the areas from 757.10?

It certainly shouldn't. Can you restore a backup of your area file (e.g. areas.0.bbs, auto-generated) and see if you can compare the files before/after and reproduce the problem using AreaFix (or not)?

I did restore his areas from the backup and asked him to check that I had done it right.

I'll do some testing and see what I can see. Looking at sbbsecho.log it looks like it just removed .1 and .2. Not sure what happened with .10.

I have a different example of this happening.

I am linked (fido) to another Synchronet system and had to reconnect 9 areas the were removed from my node at that system for unknown reasons. I asked the sysop at that system and he had no idea why that would happen. I wonder but I don't know if that was also caused by someone doing a %-All command to areafix?

Sorry I have no idea why that happened but will do some testing here (given time) and see if I can get better information for you.

If you can give me a timeline as to when you sent the areafix requests I can look at my areas*.bbs and see the subs you were connected to.

As I said, I go back 10 diffferent changes so I can when and where areas were added or deleted.

If you can give me a timeline as to when you sent the areafix requests I can look at my areas*.bbs and see the subs you were connected to.

One area was Z1C. I connected and never disconnected that area. I connected that area 24-48 hours before I netmailed you.

As I said, I go back 10 diffferent changes so I can when and where areas were added or deleted.

If you can find my node connected to Z1C and have a backup after that when I was not connected before I reconnected a short time later that will give us a good idea of the time frame we are dealing with.

I have never done a %+All or %-All at your node. I suspect but don't know that a %-All command by another node may have removed my node as well by mistake. It looks like 757.10 was removed from his areas (except one) when I did a %-All from 757.1 or 757.2. I can't say that difinitively though since that was not logged. It just looks that way.

Do you see any nodes doing a %-All during this time frame?

No one did a %-ALL during that timeframe. What you can do is do a test. First send a %query to see what you are connected to and then do a %-all, %query again and then readd the areas again manually. I thougk you're connected to about 20 now?

Let me know when you're doing all this via netmail so I can go to the exact time in my logs.

    Thanks..

No one did a %-ALL during that timeframe.

    That deflates my theory.. :)

I am connected to 29 areas now and a %query confirmed that.

I'm just heading that way now and will netmail you before and after I am done.
