• Flash Telnet test wanted

From Charlie@VERT/COFFEE to All on Monday, March 19, 2018 17:30:49
Can anyone visit my BBS's web site and test the Flash Telnet app listed at the bottom of the main screen and let me know if they're able to connect? I can't test it myself because I can't do "hairpinning" to my DDNS hostname and back.

    http://coffee.synchro.net

    Thanks.

I might count as the best "anyone" for such a test. It's not something I regularly do. :-D

It looked real nice. The top graphic's display was delayed for a few seconds, as if the whoosiemajigger software was looking real hard for the file. Just before I left it I saw... "Up Time 0 days, 6:29:37". And it still seemed to be working fine.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Well, yes, I think so. I did a lot of work on the web interface yesterday, so now I have to get email working and add a bunch more files to the downloads area, and maybe try to beautify the web FTP interface and bring it in line with the theme of the rest of the site, then maybe play around with trying to add different door games. Oh, and figure out how to update from CVS without losing my customizations and configurations, to see if that fixes my occasional segmentation fault crashes.

I got the website theme changed to the way I like it; got DDNS and DoveNet working; got DOSEMU working (which was a royal pain because it's abandonware and the dosemu-freedos package in my Linux distro's repositories doesn't work: I had to find a working version of the source code and of Freedos then compile it); and more or less learned how to add files to the downloads (if I can only remember what I did a few weeks ago.)

I think I'm around 85% to 90% of the way toward getting a complete web-based BBS working (not counting still needing telnet for doors), which is what I'm after. Then I'll add it to the list.

Thanks! It wasn't easy as it's not just straight HTML and CSS, or a CMS-based system, like I'm used to. Components of the web interface are in sbbs/web/root, web/templates, web/lib, and some of the stuff is done in code. (God only knows where the web FTP server's screens are generated from. I'll find them though.)

One day I will beautify mine.. :)

Handy tools for that include KFind (I have a KDE Linux system) or a similar file search app to let you search for strings of text within files in a directory, and Mozilla-based browsers' web developer tools. Also two websites relating to colors: https://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm#color-codes and https://www.webpagefx.com/web-design/color-picker/ not to mention a good text editor and https://www.w3schools.com/Css/ for "how do I" references regarding CSS.

A lot of it is cut and try. Change something then view your board's website and see if what you did changed anything or not (if not, undo what you did) and if it did, did it do what you wanted or instead do something weird, like making a font huge or moving your breadcrumbs to one side or something like that.

with trying to add different door games. Oh, and figure out how to update from CVS without losing my customizations and configurations, to see if that fixes my occasional segmentation fault crashes.

Thanks! That will save me some time searching the Synchronet wiki for instructions.

They do tend to do that.

I did manage to get email working both directions just a few minutes ago, anyway. It would seem that besides blocking Telnet on port 23 my ISP blocks port 25. I had to relay outgoing email through VERT. But it works now, so that's something I can cross off my list.

Gotta fix the crashes, and get sbbs to run as a daemon/service on boot instead of having to manually start it in a command console. I wonder if sbbs can be daemonized as an unprivileged user instead of having to run as root? (Dang, that's one more "to-do list" addition! You're right!)

Thanks, Marisa, but these scripts don't work on my (Mandriva-based) Linux distro. It doesn't have systemctl.

After the CVS update that I did this morning, the instructions on setting up daemon mode to start sbbs from http://wiki.synchro.net/install:nix worked, which they didn't with my previous, non-upgraded installation. I have it set to start upon boot.

So that's one more thing I can cross off of my sbbs to do list. :)

Thanks. I couldn't get my system to recognize that script as a service when I put it in init.d. I'm still working on daemonizing SBBS.

awww, geez... sorry... yeah, there's a command thing you run that scans init.d and makes the softlinks in the various rc.x directories... i totally forget what that command is, though :( :( :(

It's OK. After doing a CVS update yesterday morning, the instructions for starting sbbs in daemon mode on the Unix install page of the wiki worked, which they didn't before.

i finally went digging... the command is update-rc.d and you'd use it like this
    with the script i posted...

    update-rc.d sbbs enable

to disable the daemon, repeat the above command with "disable" instead of "enable"... enabling it means that it will automatically be run in the indicated runlevels when the system is booted or the runlevel changed... one can still

    sudo /etc/init.d/sbbs start

to kick it manually... the options are "start", "stop", "restart", "reload", and "status"...

i know you don't need it now but there it is if you might need it in the future
    ;)
