Yeah, cycles per second/Hz doesn't really make sense for a data transfer rate.. I was familiar with characters per second.

Think anyone involved with BBSing back then was familiar with characters per TL>second. :)

    Oh, my baud. <G> I remember the days of 300, 1200, 2400, 9600, 14400,
    28800, and 33600 baud.

Or, "My name is Baud -- James Baud". <G>

I got my first computer (with a modem) in 1992, which was all hand-me-down stuff. My first modem, at that time, was a 2400 baud Hayes external modem (I don't remember if that was typical at the time or if faster modems like 9600 were already common). I eventually got a 14.4k modem a couple years later and then went on to 33.6k from there, I believe.. Then of course 56k for the internet.

Yep. Dumb modems were the ones with the speed and answer/originate switch. You'd set the modem to "originate" to dial a BBS, then call the BBS manually on the attached phone. When the BBS answers, flick the other switch from "phone" to "data".

That's how the first modem I had was set up. A toggle switch to answer
or originate. You dialed the phone number manually. When the other line
picked up, you clicked the modem switch to originate, then hung up the

With the terminal program and a Hayes or US Robotics modem, it dials

The reason for that is that the blood clotting mechanism skyrockets
on the 8th day after birth...so, there's not a ton of bleeding when
    it's done.

Oh, OK. And these days, babies aren't kept in hospital that long.

yeah, i don't know where that eight days came from... i'm aware of
several who were done within the first three or four days... when my oldest was born, we were out of the hospital and home in four days...

When my younger sister was born 40 years ago, babies were kept in hospital for 6-7 days, but yes, it does seem to be 3-4 days these days.

It's like "drive through childbirth" or "drive through surgery". The
main reason is that the insurance companies don't want to pay a ton of
money for an extended hospital stay. Yet, they would love to have you as
a policyholder, and paying them the premiums.

I think I have all you beat. Turnarounds for births in Alberta (and
probably most of Western Canada) are pretty quick. My daughter was born
in June, 2007 at about midnight. She went home before noon the next day.
That was less than a 12-hour turnaround.

My son was born in 2006 and had an "extended" stay because they thought
he was a bit raspy when he cried (wanted to check for fluid, etc). He
    went home within 36 hours.

When I was born (1976), my mom said that she stayed in the hospital for
about a week. Somewhere around the mid-90's is when they made huge
cutbacks in health spending in Alberta, and stays for births and certain surgeries were massively cut back to where they are basically
    in-and-out.

I love having public healthcare, don't get me wrong, but you can
definitely see a stark difference in the level of care when the
taxpayers are paying for it. Especially in wait times for non-critical
    care.

Rushing them out the door! I don't think it's that quick here, though I can't be too sure, not a thing I have a lot of contact with. :)

We have waiting lists here that can extend months for elective surgery under the public system, etc, but I still prefer that to other systems I've seen.
