• SBBSEcho Troubles

From Daryl Stout@VERT/TBOLT to All on Saturday, September 30, 2017 23:10:33
I must be friggin' dense...but I can NOT get SBBSEcho to
work properly. I zapped the bad packets, the SBBSECHO.LOG
and the SBBSECHO.INI file, to try to get a complete fresh
start with it. I have also REMmed out all the SBBSEcho
command lines and Internet Rex tossing lines on the system,
    during nightly maintenance.

Every time I've tried to set it up lately, when trying
to do it from a command prompt, it'd crash...so nothing
would be saved to the file.

I have tried the deals with the various nodes, plus #:ALL
for the wildcards and routing, but there was no way to tell
SBBSEcho where to put the outbound packets...so, I have
stray orphan packets...or bad outgoing packets...so, nothing
goes out. Then, I'm getting a bunch of bad inbound packets,
which I zapped as well...as SBBSEcho would not toss them.

I have tried the deals with the ZIP and UNZIP deal (over
PKZIP/PKUNZIP) and even just the raw packet files...same
    results...corrupted data, and nothing tosses.

Will another tosser work besides SBBSEcho?? I remember
using InterMail a long time ago (I have a registered copy),
and it had an option for Synchronet directories...but I
would have to reinstall it for it to work.

Even if just a guide to a basic template of how the
SBBSECHO.INI file would help -- or even a Wiki or docs
page link. With that guide, I can do the rest myself.

The QWK Networking works just fine, with its tossing,
etc. But, I can NOT get the FIDONet FTN tossing and
processing to work at all....and I'm at my wits end.

I'm not going to abandon running SBBS...I can do far
more with it than I could with GT Power or Virtual
Advanced (VADV32). But, it irritates me that I can NOT
figure out how to do what should be simple...to set up
    SBBSEcho.

I just got over severe viral bronchitis...and have
been up nearly 18 hours today. I have got to take some
time away from the BBS (except for updating local ham
radio and weather data)...so, there's no rush on a reply.

I'll probably kick myself for missing something simple,
but I wonder if anyone else has had such issues. I'm also
running the latest build of SBBS 3.17 (Sep. 30, 2017)
under Windows 7 32-bit. Everything else with Synchronet
works FINE...only the FTN Message Tossing is the one bad
    deal right now.

    why did you do that?

post your configuration. also you are doing too many things at once
when you are confused which probably just makes more problems.

using words like 'crash' dont really help. the results of the log file might be helpful.

Every time I've tried to set it up lately, when trying

would be saved to the file.

What would crash? Saved to what file? Please provide more details.

If you want to start with a stock sbbsecho.ini file, you can find it here: http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

I will be documenting all the values and sections in the sbbsecho.ini file, but in the mean time, you should be able to do everything you need to do using echocfg. Is there a reason you can't use echocfg?

    Rob,

What would crash? Saved to what file? Please provide more details.

Even with the default sbbsecho.ini file, when I tried to run it, if I
tried to do it with the keyboard (from a Command Prompt), instead of
using the mouse, Windows 7 32-bit would crash on it.

If you want to start with a stock sbbsecho.ini file, you can find it here: DM>http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

I'll grab that here in a bit. I've had to be away from the BBS for a
    few days.

I will be documenting all the values and sections in the sbbsecho.ini file, DM>in the mean time, you should be able to do everything you need to do using DM>echocfg. Is there a reason you can't use echocfg?

Except for it crashing when I try to run it, no.

Can you provide details of the crash? Can you send me an sbbsecho.ini file which causes it to crash? What version of echocfg.exe are you using?

    Rob,

Can you provide details of the crash? Can you send me an sbbsecho.ini file DM>which causes it to crash? What version of echocfg.exe are you using?

Even with a default sbbsecho.ini, it crashes.

I go to a Command Prompt under Windows 7 32-bit. I type the following,
    and press <ENTER>.

    SET SBBSCTRL=C:\SBBS\CTRL
    SET SBBSNODE=C:\SBBS\NODE1

Then, I type ECHOCFG and press <ENTER>.

If I use the keyboard to switch options (which is easier), it crashes.
When I use the mouse, it rarely crashes...but "a bad keyboard input",
such as moving the cursor up and down with the arrow keys, crashes it.

Windows 7 32-bit responds "Echocfg has stopping working". When I press <ENTER>, I'm back to the command prompt. Upon the crash, any changes to SBBSECHO.INI are not saved.

What I decided to do, since I was getting bad packets from nodes, and SBBSEcho was saying a packet from node A was not from node B, I decided
just to make the FIDONet related echoes as FTN -- and all other message networks will be done via QWK Networking. That part of the BBS is
    working flawlessly, and it's automated.

The SBBSCSTRL environment variable should be set persistently. See wiki.synchro.net/config:env for more details.

The SBBSNODE environment variable should not need to be set.

Then, I type ECHOCFG and press <ENTER>.

If I use the keyboard to switch options (which is easier), it crashes. When I use the mouse, it rarely crashes...but "a bad keyboard input",

I wonder if there is something unique about your console settings that is causing that.
Try running echocfg.exe from Windows explorer.exe instead. Or just hit Windows Key-R,
    then type the path/to/echocfg.exe.

    When I press
<ENTER>, I'm back to the command prompt. Upon the crash, any changes to SBBSECHO.INI are not saved.

So do you still need help?

Also, you could try playing with the command-line options:
    usage: echocfg [path/to/sbbsecho.ini] [options]

    options:

    -c = force color mode
    -m = force monochrome mode
    -e# = set escape delay to #msec
-iX = set interface mode to X (default=auto) where X is one of:
    W = Win32 native mode
    A = ANSI mode
    D = standard input/output/door mode
    -v# = set video mode to # (default=auto)
    -l# = set screen lines to # (default=auto-detect)

In particular, "-id" should always work if there are issues with your console.
