I like to have an undelete utility around for those kinds of mishaps.. If you're running Windows, there's a free utility called Recuva that can recover delted files. With Windows, you have to do the recover ASAP because there's always the chance Windows could write to the drive while it does OS operations, and with any writes, there's a chance it could use one of the sectors on the drive that your files were using.

you can... RIP is just like ANSI except that its codes are meant to be interpreted by a RIP capable terminal... one could easily have a RIP.SYS which could have displayed a RIP file just like ANSI.SYS was used to be able to display an ANS file... my first dozen or so RIP screens were hand coded just like hand coding ANSI ;)

Not exactly true. With Windows, if you delete a file using the Windows Explorer (and don't have/use the "permanently delete" option, e.g. using Shift-Delete), then the file is moved to the "recyle bin" so it may be easily recovered later. If you delete a file "permanently" using Windows Explorer or from the command prompt (e.g. using "del"), then the recycle bin is not used and then you have to use special (non-Microsoft) tools to recover deleted files.

Almost, by default, deleting files from Windows Explorer simply moves them to the Recycle Bin, from which they can be restored. Deleting files from the CLI (or using the <SHIFT> key when deleting files from Explorer) bypasses the Recycle Bin, and only dedicated "undelete" utilities can recover those files, provided you are quick enough to perform the undelete, before the OS or some other process overwrites them.

True.. I've been in the habit of using shift-delete, so I don't use the recycle bin much.

But I think the physical act of deleting files is the same though ("permanently" deleting, emptying the recycle bin, or deleting from the command prompt). And when using the recycle bin, I never really thought of that as deleting because the file isn't really deleted, just moved to a different location.

True.. I've been in the habit of using shift-delete, so I don't use
    the recycle bin much.

But I think the physical act of deleting files is the same though ("permanently" deleting, emptying the recycle bin, or deleting from the command prompt). And when using the recycle bin, I never really
thought of that as deleting because the file isn't really deleted, just moved to a different location.

Yes, if you use shift delete, the process and result is identical to using DEL from the command prompt.

If you insist, I'll just have to point and giggle. :P

The other day, I was at a local Wendy's Restaurant, and I thought I
had the belt on my pants tight enough. I started walking to the table,
and the pants started falling <blush!>. I quickly grabbed them to back
up, as I didn't want to look like so many of these kids, etc. nowadays,

    this means you are old.

But, I get my senior citizen discount...which means my bill is cheaper
than everyone else's. None of us is getting any younger, so if they're
going to offer me a senior citizen discount, I'll gladly take it.

Yeah RIP was an interesting idea, but never really took off.

So was Roboboard and Robo/FX, but apparently what we really needed was a web browser =) Robo was pretty dang sweet for it's time though. I actually went out and bought another grip of 256k simms just to have enough memory to play with it.

    ...darkwing!

Now that one I've never heard of. Obviously didn't get well known here. :(
