• SyncTERM system list

Ok, here's my only post on the subject.

    1) SyncTERM supports two sources for the BBS list. One is a per-user version for the users convenience, and the other is a per-system version so the administrator of a system can ensure all users have a specific item in their list.

    2) By default, the sort order is last connected date, then the address. The sort order can be changes using CTRL-S, and using the "Dialing List" entry allows sorting items from the system list first or last as preferred.

    3) Items have no indication of what list they were loaded from.

    4) SyncTERM does not modify system system list. This is by design. Only the Administrator should modify the system list.

    5) The system list is a text file. Every OS comes with a text file editor. Editing this list should not be beyond the capabilities of any BBS user.

    6) There is no good documentation for SyncTERM. I'm slowly working on a manual, but it's not very far along. This isn't the only feature of SyncTERM that you don't know about. If this bothers you, find software with better documentation that fills your needs because it isn't likely to change any time soon.

    7) I don't create the installers, but I do build the release binaries.

    8) I don't reccomend people run the nightly builds from http://syncterm.bbsdev.net/ these are development builds. People should run official releases from SourceForge.

    9) Even when SyncTERM is ran as an administrator, editing the system list is not allowed so that the system list doesn't just become the administrators list accidentally. One does not want the administrators user IDs and passwords in all users dialing directories. This is the point of preventing editing from within SyncTERM.

    10) Please, if this support for a system-wide dialing directory under the control of the system administrator irritates you, find another terminal program. I have no plans to ever remove this functionality, and I don't expect to create a system dialing directory editor any time soon.

    11) I think that installing a dialing directory as the system one is a perfectly appropriate thing to do. I assume that I suggested it to Digital Man when he created the installer.

    12) The phone book is not indelible, so there is no "facist dictatorism" involved.

    13) Anyone using SyncTERM for anything except BBSing is likely not using the best tool for the job.

    To sum up:
    - The feature is there.
    - Latest installers use the feature as designed.
    - The feature is not well documented.
    - I don't care how you feel about that.
    - I hope that Dran Draggore finds a different telnet client to use.
    - At some future time, I expect to create a system list tool.
