I know UPnP is already on the todo list, just wanted to add a library
    reference for you (libupnp)... http://pupnp.sourceforge.net/

I'm fine opening ports, and am uncertain how often it's an issue... and maybe objectively better to *not* set firewall rules, or port forward automagically... but just throwing it out there.

you do understand that uPNP bypasses the admin's firewall rules, right? granted, today's uPNP offers a lot more control but still, any program that is uPNP capable can easily bypass firewall security restrictions... even without uPNP there are apps that tunnel stolen credentials and personal information through port 80 or even port 53... hiding it in such a manner as to make it appear to be legitimate traffic for that port...

My 2 cents -- I like running all of Synchronet's services inside the firewall for my amusement but don't necessarily want to advertise them to the outside world. POP3/SMTP for one example.
