• Fido Netmail?

From Jeffs@VERT/REGION14 to Digital Man on Friday, November 20, 2015 22:19:38
    Hello There,

Are there any plans to add the ability to send Fidonet netmail from the
SBBS web interface? When other Fidonet nodes send me netmail they show up
in the SBBS web interface as an email. I currently do not have any email services within SBBS enabled. I am currently using SBBS v3.16.

Well you got me thinking: why not? If the web UI is already putting the netmail in the mailbase, SBBSecho could export it. I never *expected* outbound FTN netmail to be placed in the mail base, but since that feature is there in the Web UI, it wasn't too hard to have SBBSecho then export it to FTS-1 (*.msg) format. Anyway, it's implemented now (SBBSecho v2.30) you can find it in the daily/development build dated Nov-23. You can just extract the sbbsecho.exe (assuming you're running Windows) and use it with your SBBS v3.16, no problem. Let me know how it works for you.

One note: you'll probably want to update your savemsg.ssjs file as I did make a couple of fixes there as well: http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/web/root/msgs/savemsg.ssjs

I updated the files provided and now I am able to send outgoing FTN netmail from the SBBS web interface. I also decided to put SBBS behind Apache to help minimize the IP\Port confusion. I will be enabling email within SBBS soon. Is the proper FTN netmail syntax <Name>@Zone:Net\Node? That seems to work for me currently. But would @Zone:Net\Node also work?

Upon checking I find that if I address a FTN netmail message as <Name>@Zone:Net/Node it gets sent out and received as a FTN netmail. But,
if I address the same FTN netmail as @Zone:Net/Node it IS received but as an email message with the from address being <name>@p.f.n.z.fidonet.org. During this testing I am sending netmails to and from BBBS and SBBS.

I thought it would be a non-backward compatible change (requiring a major version bump in my versioning scheme), but it (for now at least) is backwards compatible. When I remove the .msg support from sbbs, then it will require that you use SBBSecho v2.30+, and I plan to do that soon (before v4).

I'm not really sure what that means.

That needs to be a forward-slash betwen the net and node.

That seems to work for me currently. But would @Zone:Net\Node also work?

No, you need a destination name.

That is expected (withOUT the ".org" TLD). The FidoNet address syntax (Zone:Net/Node[.point]) is not compatible with Internet email clients, so I needed to use an RFC-compliant addressing scheme for the gateway. The user shouldn't know or care that the address is being translated to/from FTN to Internet.
