i havent had a POTS line since 1997; i've been all cell since then.
i do however have a guy who setup some hardware at an isp that forwards a cincinatti phone number to a telnet connection. it breaks down a lot but he fixes it. it's free so i cant complain. i just wish i could call my own bbs on a dialup line some day. that would be great.

this same person expressed interest in setting up a menu of systems to choose from that would forward a dialup connection to telnet as well. i think he's been really busy with traveling and he may have forgotten about all this, though. it would be cool but i dont think it would get much usage.

I still have users that use dial up modems to connect to my wildcat board. Even though they have internet they prefer the dial up. They get upset when I message out about cancelling my phone line. I get new users dialing up. Most of these people are older who want to relive or experience the dial up scene.

I think it would be cool to use dialup again on a BBS, but I still am not sure how much worth it would be. SyncTerm can simulate slower baud rates - although that still doesn't provide the full experience of dialing out & hearing the connect sounds, etc.. You could probably simulate that though.

    go into the editor settings.

yes thank you digital man, i just installed iceedit, and although i like the appearance, but, i have found 2 things about so far that i dont like,

    1. when i try to quote it says List or [ALL] if i hit list nothing is quoted, if i hit enter for all nothing is quoted, this is making problems for guys
who i respond to who cant remember the initial converstion.

    2. the other thing is like you said i will edit iceedit to remove the kludge lines although, i dont remember seeing that setting when i configured
    iceedit.
other than those, i have always loved the ice products ever since i ran my iniq board back in the eighties and ninetys

daniel, you should use quikedit, the successor to iceedit.

    iceedit has a few quirks.

just follow the install instructions and everything will work.
it is now abandonware; the author approves of using the crack because he has lost all the source code.

    Joe,

anyone else had a guy request they install a modem so he could experien the old days of dialup?? :) hehe i cant believe i got that email today

    I have one installed <G>

I used to have dial-up years ago...running it first exclusively with
GT Power, then had it with Synchronet.

But, at the apartment complex where I have lived since 2003, several
years ago, construction crews were doing work out here. While several underground cables were CLEARLY MARKED, the crews still sliced them like
a knife through butter!! They left the holes open, and it poured rain
that night night, flooding the cables. The resulting line noise made
    voice calls extremely noisy/static filled...and modem/fax/data calls
    were impossible.

Plus, with being on a fixed income (I've been disabled since 2004), I
    cna't see spending $50 a month for a vanilla dial-up line.

it's all about what you can get away with once you leave the premise, it seems. Nowhere near the impact, but I remember a company that had their T1 go down, leaving us without network connectivity and voice trunk lines back to a corporate office.

Turns out one of the techs came in to install a fax line in a multi-tenant building and had run out of pairs. He "didn't see" the yellow tag tied to the cross-connect identifying it as a T1 circuit, put his butt set on it, didn't hear dial tone, and "borrowed" the pair.

When we found out what had happened and called Pac Bell, they started quoting normal repair times. For a problem they'd caused. Escalation ensued and I had someone out in a half an hour. They wouldn't send the same guy out, however, as I'd hoped. He would have had a fun time with me hovering over him.

That of course is a technical fault but someone who obviously did not know what he wwas doing. (or could not read). Buried lines are supposed to be searched for and marked with paint lines and flags.

I had something similar happen to my DSL. They cut my Internet instead of my son's who was moving. When I called I got the same crap as you did. Oh it takes two weeks before we can fix it. All it took was to put the switch box back into my circuit, and I mentioned since it only took them 5 minutes to unhook it they should be able to reverse it immediatly. I had to argue with the rep, and the best she could do was the following Friday. It was only 3 days, but 3 days too long

Yup, and could be really dangerous to the clown on the backhoe

IF HE DIES, HE DIES! just kidding. i've heard of a lot of backhoes cutting power lines, but not the operator getting zapped.

Probably like me cutting thru the power cord on my circular saw, and wondering why it quit <G>

I had never heard of that. Apparently the province I live in does not
    yet subscribe to that number

Canada? Canada has Click Before You Dig.

Never heard of that one either. Around here they keep advertising Call before you dig.

That looks like a pretty cool system. I didn't know they had that.

    Joe,

that happened to me when i was working. the crews cut through some majo lines underground and everyone lost power for couple of days. it was in industrial area so many businesses were effected.

i just takes one clown with a backhoe to screw it up for everyone

Yup, and could be really dangerous to the clown on the backhoe

Not to mention expensive, especially if warning signs were clearly
    noted.

Sounds like the Redneck way of doing it. Their smoke detector consists
of a container of Jiffy Pop popcorn on the wall in the kitchen, If you
hear rapid popping, it means something's on fire. <G>

I've heard that one <G> I actually did cut thru the cord one time. Didnt even blow a fuse. Thankfully the saws are protected, so the user wont feel it

If you know there are utilities buried, there is usually a tape warning of the utility above it. When you see that, you go slow with directions <G> If things were not marked on top, then you're on your own I guess.
