this is just a general shoutout and a thanx to the more experienced sysops and lurkers who have and are still taking the time to help me finetune my board, its frustrating to encounter stumbling blocks, read all the docs and still have to ask for a helping hand, but, its very much appreciated!

configuring stuff, and working out problems is part of running a bbs.

A lot of new people dont know that, or just get used to everything being easy, but tinkering and defeating crappy programs and making them work is what it's all about.

dont give up and pretty soon it will be second nature to you.

make sure the leagues you enter are active and they are run by people that have their stuff together. i joined a bunch of msg nets and ibbs game networks over the years and a lot of them had their issues and werent worth all the trouble. ---

    Dan,

Sysops don't mind helping other Sysops out of a jam. For me, if I was
shown how the basic setup/syntax of a deal worked, then I could take it
from there. I've heard stories of Sysops who had another Sysop do all
the work for them...then, that "lazy Sysop" took credit for it.

I fixed a couple of BBSes for people back in the day -- before any kind of remote support. If someone was in a bind back then, you judt did it. There wasn't any internet to speak of back then, so you most likely couldn't look things up yourself. You could find another BBS to call, but that was a slow process.

just showing someone screenshots and letting them get the gist is probably the best way.

i went that route where i helped someone a little and then they wanted more and more help, and eventually they didnt want to lift a finger. i even had a guy pay me, but after i got the hard stuff done he wanted me to do every little small thing, so i got out of that situation.

i always say give the person the skills to help themselves.
back in the 'old days' usually the guys running bbses figured it all out themselves and this filtered out most of the wannabees. except for wildcat that is.

now these guys can run setup.exe and ask tons of questions without skimming the docs and get it setup. then they get bored and abandon it.
