• Synchronet SMTP Port 25

From High Spirit@VERT/DCBBS to All on Saturday, May 23, 2015 12:16:17
    Hey Everyone,

Is there any BBS to BBS communication via SMTP? If so, does Synchronet use MX records or is it hardwired to port 25?

    Hey Everyone,

Is there any BBS to BBS communication via SMTP?

Yes, any time you're sending Internet email, you're using SMTP.

    If so, does Synchronet use
MX records or is it hardwired to port 25?

Yes, the Synchronet mail server uses MX records, but those are for host-name look-ups only. Port 25 for outgoing SMTP connections is hard-coded.

My ISP blocks incoming port 25 (I can send out port 25, no problem). I run mail
server on another pc for my small business. To get around the ISP block, I have
signed up for a SMTP Proxy service. My domain MX records are pointed to the proxy service and the proxy service sends mail to my local mail server that is on a different port. So I was thinking of doing the same for the BBS. If MX records are used then all BBS to BBS mail should go through the SMTP Proxy service, correct?

You can easily solve this issue by redirecting another port to port 25
on localhost in your firewall. This should allow your smtp proxy to
    access smtp on your server.

Yeah, that's how I have everything. Unless there is a port conflict, I leave the default port settings and have the router redirect ports that I need. :)

I am an IT Guy... been doing this for many years, I just didn't know if Synchronet used MX records or if it went right to the address of the bbs on port 25. ;)

If your BBS's MX record points to the SMTP proxy service, yes.
