    Hi there,

Perhaps it's better if I netmail you but just saw you popped up here.

Just wondering if you think it would be possible to port your efforts to
allow Synchronet BBS to handle ax.25 across to a Mystic BBS system? I'm no coder but keen to try and get my Mystic system talking to a packet modem and offering local HAMS access to the echoareas.

    Any advice / thoughts appreciated.

    Best, P.

Porting it would not be easy. You could however install Synchronet (or some subset of it) and use the "ax25tunnel" script (or something similar) to create a bridge between AX.25 clients and a server of your choosing (eg. your Mystic BBS.)

(Note that I'm not saying "switch to Synchronet" or run a full Synchronet BBS, you would just need a few components.)

If your Mystic BBS is on Linux, you might just want to explore AX.25 stuff available at the OS level. There may be ways to do this more directly, though I didn't have the best luck the last time I tried.

I was afraid you'd say that. I'm not familiar with Synchronet but open to trying to install what I need to be able to get things working.

:-), sure.. but which components do you suggest I install?

Yep... it may be I may have to keep digging about a bit to see what other options there are. Thanks for your quick reply :-)

Eh ... you know, upon further consideration I might have another option for
you which may or may not be easier than getting Synchronet involved. We'd be going way off-topic for this sub, so if you want to fire off an email to echicken -at- bbs.electronicchicken.com, we can get into it a bit further.

Based on past experience, no, I wouldn't say it's a better option. That said, others may have better than I did.

The last time I tried this, I had a KISS interface configured and accepting connections just fine with the Linux AX.25 stuff. The problem was with passing traffic between these clients and the BBS. There was some utility that I don't recall the name of, which was supposed to serve as a linemode telnet client on behalf of the caller (it passes their input to the server, then passes the server's responses back to them, handling the telnet protocol internally.) Seemed simple enough, but for whatever reason and in ways I don't remember, it just didn't work.

I also messed around with JNOS, a packet BBS in its own right, I believe, which has telnet-gate functionality similar to what's described above. That mostly worked but was slow and clunky. The caller had to select a menu item from one BBS in order to be connected to the "real" BBS. I didn't find a way to automate this, but I didn't try very hard.

I tried various other things, all with their own problems, and ended up writing my own KISS-AX.25 stack with its own problems. :|

Send me an email and we can discuss further. I have some other code collecting dust around here somewhere, but I'd be glad to work on it further. This is the sort of thing that it was meant to be useful for.
