• Coincidence Or Problem With Build

From DesotoFireflite@VERT/VALHALLA to All on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 08:20:30
I'm throwing this out their, as I never had this problem until I updated with the 12/17 build. It seems my speakers attached to my sound board go off in a high piched squeel for no reason after the BBS has been up for about 14 hours. I'm sure it's a coincidence, and it's just a sound board issue, but I'm putting it out here to see if anyone else has experenced a similar issue. This high piched squeel does not affect the computer or the BBS, and all runs normally, but to stop the squeel, I have to reboot. I'm putting in a new sound borar this weekend, but I wanted to get feedback if it's not a related issue to the recent build. Thanks

you should probably take the board out before it fries and damages your other components

OK, I've put the new sound board in, and about 12 hours later it's squeeling again. Before I compleatly lose my mind, is there anything in the new updat 12/17, that could cause this crazyness. I just need to know. The only thing that will clear the squeel is to reboot. but it happens again withen 12 hours. Thanks in advance. I don't use this machine for anything but the BBS. Netfinity 5100, 6 scsi drives at raid level 5EE, with 2 999MHZ PIII processors, Window 7 Pro, 32bit

I suppose anything's possible, but I would be surprised if Synchronet was causing this squealing.

It could be the speakers themselves, especially if they're amplified. What happens if you swap the speakers out for a pair of headphones - do you hear the same noise after the same amount of time? What happens if you leave the speakers powered on but not plugged in to the sound card?

It could also be that something else in the computer is failing and barfing out noise that's being picked up by the speakers. Or it could be a very interesting Synchronet bug. :D

Although I suppose you're not actually powering off the speakers whenever you reboot the computer, so this probably doesn't make much sense.

Does the noise stop if you shut Synchronet down? (That is to say, apart from the coincidence of your having updated just before the problem started, any other reason to think Synchronet is the cause?)

I feel the same way, as it's hard to believe anything in the sync code could cause this, but it's the only common denominator. Yes, I tried it with only the ear phones, same thing happens, and yes, I disconnected the speakers and left them on, no issues. I even left everything dissconected, then plugged them in this morning, and there was the squeel. I'm just puzzled. I'm seriously thinking about firing up the old PII that I ran the system on for years, and restoring the system on that, and see if I get the same results. It's not a lot of work, and it will be positive proof of hardware or software issues. I just don't see how sync could cause this. I guess I'm just curious... Thanks My Friend.

No, the noise continues, I tried that this morning. I'm going to check the memory, by removing one chip at a time over the next few days. We had something simalar happen on the server at work happen a few years back, and found a mismatch in one of the memory modules. I guess the only reason I posted here was to see if anyone may have had the same issue. I have a big fear it may be the motherboard, that is why I am thinking about moving the bbs to the old machine till I get it figured out. Grrrr, sometimes I forget how much fun this is...LOL

I would if the motherboard had a speaker connection. I like to here when someone logs on, and when I get mail. IBM left the speaker connections and speakers off the Netfinity 5100. I'll get it figured out, or I'll get another system. You can pick one up off of ebay for less then a 100 bucks, so I'm not gonna spend any real money on this one.

I've been thinking about the OS actually. I'll get it figured out in time. Unfortunatly, my work schedule doesn't always allow me the needed time.

It's hard to say what might be causing that. I've been thinking about it, and this is just a guess, but I wonder if there might be some kind of network activity that's slightly different in the 12/17 update, and perhaps the network activity is causing some kind of interference from the PC's network adapter that's being picked up by the sound card? Or perhaps something similar. It's just a guess though..

Did you do any other software or driver updates around that time that might be affecting the hardware somehow?

Don't know, But I think I may be on the trail of something now. It may be a memory chip. I have started to pull one at a time, and the first one I pulled was last night, so far so good. I'm using shelded memory, but I had to replace a chip about 4 weeks ago, and all I had was a unshilded chip. I can't see why it went 4 weeks without a problem, but there may be just enough difference to be causing something strange. I'll know in the morning.

Did you do any other software or driver updates around that time that might be affecting the hardware somehow?

No changes in other software or anything else since we got the time thing fixed.
