• Enable ssh on sycnronet on ec2 ubuntu instance?

    Hello! I've sort of fallen down a rabbit hole trying to set up a BBS on an amazon ec2 instance, I'm wondering if any folks running synchronet on linux can help a newbie.
    I was able to install Synchronet 3.16, and I can launch configuration & the BBS itself, but I'd like to be able to have users SSH into the BBS, and I can't seem to find where to enable that within synchronet's configuration. SSH is unblocked on the ec2 instance, but ssh'ing to the ip will just connect you to ec2, not to the BBS.
    Sorry if this is a dumb question!

    You enable SSH in the ctrl/sbbs.ini file. If you already have SSH enabled on the IP (on port 22), then you'll probably need to use a different TCP port for the BBS's SSH connections.

    See http://wiki.synchro.net/config:sbbs.ini for details.

    Halfway there, I set the port in sbbs.ini to 6100 and opened port 6100 in ec2, but when I try to connect to [ec2hostnameblahblah]:6100 I get

    Well, if I just put in the hostname without :6100 then it connects to the ec2 (it goes back to assuming port 22)
    I can include the hostname, but I didn't want to post it if I don't need to... On Tuesday, February 18, 2014 5:33:26 PM UTC-6, Digital Man wrote:

    Put it where? What SSH client are you trying to use? Apparently, it doesn't recognize <host>:<port> syntax and you need to specify the port number another way.

    I'm using Synchronet 3.16 on a EC2 instance, but Windows Server 2008. It was rocky in the beginning, but now is rolling along. What issues are you having?

    If you're working with 'ssh' on *NIX, the ssh client does not parse a hostname:port in that format at all, nor does it handle it as a standard URL. The invocation that you're looking for is: 'ssh -p 6100 hostname.fapfapfap.org' or whatever.

    fooey, now it gives me a "connection refused" when I try to connect with -p 6100. even though 6100 is opened in the ec2 security group inbound rules, and sbbs.ini has:
    ; TCP port for Secure Shell (SSH) server:
    SSHPort=6100
    and connecting to the same hostname without a port specified logs in to the ec2 instance.
    I've got Synchronet launched in another session. All nodes show waiting for connection...
    Should I nuke my linux ec2 instance and do this with a windows instance instead? Is that easier?
