• more sbbs 3.16 fun with the nt service

From Ner@VERT/NERBBS to All on Friday, February 14, 2014 19:41:45
    Hi guys,

I've been trying to run the synchronet nt service to see if I could circumvent my erros and allow my system to be more stable. The past couple of days, without any warning and with no idea why, all of my services stop working.
The services say that they are still running but to get the bbs back and running again, I have to stop the service and then start all services. I can tell this has happened when the web server stops serving pages. Is my best
bet just to ditch the nt service and run things through the console app? At this point, I'm having to baby this thing to get it to work. I'm not sure how to send debug info as it doesn't seem to crash outwardly. Any ideas?

    Noel

Are you having problems with executables that you built yourself or executables that you downloaded from Vertrauen (or both)?

If you built the executables yourself, did you build/run debug or release versions?

Tracker1 (I think it was him) once released a program to specifically monitor and rerun sbbsctrl.exe if it exited. You may be able to find that somewhere or even a generic Windows tool to do such a thing. I wouldn't run one (cause I like to know when there's a problem), but I also don't have the problem you're describing.

    Hey DM,

I haven't built a version yet, but I'm running the vert compiled version. I plan on getting the cvs source and building a debug version as even switching back to the sbbs console caused a crash today which, if I were running a debug version, could have helped us. So, essentially, I'm getting crashes with
sbbs, sbbsctrl, and sbbsntsvcs which makes me believe it's somethig going on with a library somewhere. I too want to know when something is not working,
so not sure I'd want a program to rerun sbbs, but if I ever leave for extended periods of time, it might be useful. If this helps you at all, the errors pretty much happen a lot of the time when users run usurper32 (run as a native program.

Does this help you at all?

Do the crashes *only* happen when they run usurper32? There may be a crash.log in one or more of your node directories. That might give some indication as to what the users (of the terminal server) were doing at the time of a crash. But if you're not actually getting a Windows exception popup message, I wonder if it's actually a "crash" but rather "something else" which is terminating Synchronet?

Do you have any "security software" running which might interpret Synchronet (or the door) as malware and kill it?

    Hi Rob,

Here's what I've found, and no I have no vvariable values or call stack at
this point. Working on getting that built.

On sbbs.exe the console service, Iv'e been able to get it to crash with exception a coupel of times. This seems to happen as either users are logging off of a game or off of the system, I'm not sure when. Previously, I have
been in scfg configuring. Most of the time scf happily throws the semaphore and the system readys itself to recycle servers shen everyone gets off. The exception occurred either as the servers were restarting, shortly after the user finished a game. I've also found, as did the nt service, that when recycled after an scfg update while users are logged on, that servers go down, but do not come back up. THis isn't happening all the time, but more often than not, it's been when I've made config changes. Perhaps it happens when I make a change, and, users being still logged on, I make another. I will have to test this.

I don't have any security software except for windows Firewall which interferes. I have a crash.log that was generated, but all it says is that
the user was running usurper32, and then that after 38 minutes or so, the log was terminated. Perhaps the user logged off and then, when the server
recycled itself, it didn't complete. This could have also been why sbbsctrl crashed and is most likely happening with both sbbsntsvcs and sbbs at similar points.

I ran sbbs.exe for about two days, downing the server manually when I made
scfg changes, and the servers ran fine. I know things have crashed because in loading the web server, it doesn't deliver pages. Then I check the terminal server and it acts down. In sbbs, it still shows threads and active services. I'll try to log on myself and reproduce the error, but this may help you, not sure.

Let me know if you would like me to move this to email, it might help others however which is why I've posted it here.
