• synchronet 3.16 control panel crashing on indows 7

    Hi guys/Digital Man/Deuce,

I'm running the 2014-02009 build of synchronet 3.16. From time to time, and I'm not sure what causes it, but synchronet, at least the control panel crashes, throwing a ntdll.dll exception. The last time it happened someone
was connected to SSH but it doesn't seem to happen all the time when people connect to SSH. I also should say I use a screen reader (JAWS) but that shouldn't be a problem. I don't have the hex error codes. Has anyone seen this? I'm also running the latest versions (placed in the windows dll directory of sbbsexec. Any ideas?

Likely, it's just a bug. You could help us by building and running a debug version of Synchronet, but with a screen reader that might prove to be extra challenging (I really don't know).

Have you considered running sbbs.exe instead of sbbsctrl.exe or perhaps Synchronet as NT services? You might have different results (e.g. higher reliability) if you use a different sysop console/configuration.

I just rebooted my server and apparently it had crashed at some point.
I get this every once in awhile. No idea what causes it though. A few
times it locked up my server tight and the only way to resolve it was
reset button. That was fun.... Not!

I have no problem building a debug version. JAWS works with msvc and its
tools and the free addon for c compiling. I read the source notes and when I get some time, I'd be happy to grab the cvs, build it, and run it. When I'm using the debug version, when it crashes, I'm assuming it will pop up some
line numbers and modules where it's crashed?

About sbbs.exe, I did run it and it seems to be stable. What I've settled on now is running sbbs as an nt service. That way if the control panel crashes,
I should be able to just restart it and services will continue on happily. Reason why I thought of this is because when control panel crashed, the services kept on, until I restarted control panel. I liked console mode, but it's nice to have the ability to run control panel if I want it, especially to do things like sysop chat etc. I know I can do it from the terminal, but there's times when gui works best.

Let me know. I do have some programming knowledge so if I can help let me know.

If it crashes, you'll get an option to run the debugger (MSVC/Studio) and in that case, the contents of the "call stack" are most useful, but there can be other interesting/helpful information (like the contents of the local variables
in the context of the crashed thread).
