• setting up dbridge mailer for dos

From Harvey Simpson@VERT/GAMES to All on Friday, January 03, 2014 21:46:08
Hi all I am setting up dbridge for dos in an old computer so that I can setup a dialup bbs using synchronet. I have tried to call in when dbridge is loaded up and have added the command line in the program to load the BBS and it connects but after a couple of seconds it says no carrier and I don't get hit escape twice or anything this computer has very little memory. any help would be apprecicated. thanks, Harvey

I'm wondering if your passing the correct port from the mailer to the BBS.

Just wondering... Why not use a windows 32bit mailer with the latest and greatest version of Synchronet

What version of Synchronet are you trying to do this with?

Synchronet v3 cannot be used in this way but there are certainly better/easier ways to "setup a dialup BBS using Synchronet". You don't need dbridge.

you need to read the documentation.
    it's not rocket surgery, harvey.

You should just tell him to get the shareware version of Frontdoor being he only wants to do POTS. There he can use events, errorlevels and have the caller determind if he wants to go to the BBS. Easy... :)

Or SexPOTS would do the job as well, and just ignore Fidonet altogether. The Radius/Taurus mailer can take phone calls and pass them to a BBS, though I've never tried it with sbbs. Might look up the Radius documentation online somewhere and see if you can figure it out.

I think they are windows only. and 32 bit at that. DBridge is still DOS based, but optimized for Windows these days. Not sure if there is still a pure dos version or not.

Hmm, an empty quote got saved so here it is again <G>

Yes, SexPOTS will, but since I have downlinks and since they sometimes use POTS to get their mail, I have to use something else. I had Intermail running for years, but it is only 16 bit, and for this caller to telnet kludge I needed a 32 bit front end.

Could someone help me please. thanks, Harve

no such thing as a "door mailer"... perhaps you are thinking of the old DOS BBS
style of "shell to mailer" mode?

it has always been easier to run the mailer and then let it feed to the BBS by starting the BBS with the proper command lines... among those are that the connection on the port is already active, what the speed of the connection is and how much time remains until the next mailer event... those are only three of the possibilities...

but with synchronet and other BBS packages available these days, you don't need
to worry about this type of stuff because the BBS runs on one port and the mailer runs on another port so there's no passing off from one to the other... not unless you are trying to run FTN-over-telnet and using the same telnet port
for the BBS... in that case, then the old rules do apply and the BBS software has to have the command parameters to start it as mentioned above...

okay you be the next guy to babysit him then.
    do it via email, though.

i do not exaggerate. you will eventually think you are talking to some
joke chat bot when you deal with this guy. it just keeps going in a loop.

i compared him to phil, but that was not fair. phil, underneath is a smart guy and he gets shit done when he puts his head into it. he just asks questions to things he knows answers to, maybe because he is unsure of himself or some other personality quirk.

    :)

Either. Eggdrop bots can be scripted to do anything asked of them. Just setup keywords in the bot, give a command that will show the user the list that is available then the users trigger those key words and it will answer... say with the appropriate link to the wiki. I'm sure you can even script sub-menus to really pinpoint the question for a correct answer.
