anyone find the idea of deism appealing?
In the recent debate I decided not to make a big stink about someone's claim that faith is a requirement of belief in God. That person seemed to be talking more specifically about the Christian God, and in that context their statement was fairly accurate. Some forms of Deism are great examples of how there are people who believe that faith is *not* a requirement for belief in God, and that God's existence can actually be proven without diminishing the concept of God itself.
I don't find it the least bit appealing though. This seems like an option for people who need something to believe in but don't want to subscribe to one of the more traditional systems. I don't feel that there's such a void in my life, so I think I'll just skip it.
Although Deism takes several forms, Atari X recently described one form which said that God created the world then stepped back, has nothing to do with it anymore, won't help you and won't give you eternal life afterwards. I see no harm in believing in such a God, but no point in it either.
I think I'm happier sitting over here, not believing in anyone else's God and not concocting a God that suits my preferences, either.
