Well last week one of our vB programmers put in his notice and next the second one will be doing the same. That leaves me and our DBA, neither of which are currently skilled in VB. I'm learning, but I'm not up to snuff just quite yet.
So an interesting chain of events... Instead of having 'plenty of time' to learn VB and the company code, I now have like two weeks before I'm thrown in there, trial by fire if you will.

Ouch, good luck with that.. it really sucks... Honestly, you will probably stuck trying to re-prioritize your time. Bug fixes should probably come before anything else.. any "enhancements" should probably be placed on hold for a month or so... VB really isn't too bad, I don't recall if you're in v2003, or v2005 though... 2005 adds a lot to the table...
I'm almost surprised they had as much trouble as you describe finding someon though... of course I've seen so many job postings, and am now getting about recruiter emails a day, so it could be that bad.
So if anyone want's to move to central texas and is into VB....
