• Interesting twist...

From Sam Alexander@VERT/SIDEBAND to All on Friday, August 03, 2007 13:01:00
This week an interesting twist of events has taken place. The company I started working for three weeks ago currently has four programmers on
staff, three of which are VB coders (I being one) and our DBA. I came in after they had no luck finding a skilled VB programmer so they could teach
me VB and in time become a productive programmer on staff.

Well last week one of our vB programmers put in his notice and next the
second one will be doing the same. That leaves me and our DBA, neither of which are currently skilled in VB. I'm learning, but I'm not up to snuff
    just quite yet.

So an interesting chain of events... Instead of having 'plenty of time' to learn VB and the company code, I now have like two weeks before I'm thrown
in there, trial by fire if you will.

    Fun Fun...

    Sam

Ouch, good luck with that.. it really sucks... Honestly, you will probably be stuck trying to re-prioritize your time. Bug fixes should probably come before anything else.. any "enhancements" should probably be placed on hold for a month or so... VB really isn't too bad, I don't recall if you're in v2003, or v2005 though... 2005 adds a lot to the table...

I'm almost surprised they had as much trouble as you describe finding someone though... of course I've seen so many job postings, and am now getting about 2 recruiter emails a day, so it could be that bad.

    Hi Michael,

Actually you're right on target, we plan on making bug fixes a priority,
plus often times folks need custom reports put together and this will also
be up there on the list. Enhancements and other things will be on hold if
for no other reason then we still need to learn the code.

As for versions, most of the ASP.Net stuff is on 2003 but the Windows apps
are all 2005. There are even a few older vB6 apps, but luckily I don't
think I'll need to mess with that.

But locally I know if many VB positions open, but for some reason it's hard
to find VB guys in this area... well programmers of any sort really. Most computer guys I know are either network admins/techs or PC techs. That's
how I got this job, they tried to bring in a VB programmer for over 2
months but had no luck, so they brought me in to train.

So if anyone want's to move to central texas and is into VB....

    Sam
