    Yeah, finally got around to reading my perl book this last weekend, it covers the basics, file input/output handles, etc, as well as the general syntax etc.. some of the shortcuts are really nice, and I can see why it's used a lot for massive text processing... I don't know how well it would work for anything gui based.. and getting another book for more advanced topics like OO structure, and module creation etc... so far seems pretty damned cool...

    Uh, s/norman/normal/;

    Yeah, finally got around to reading my perl book this last weekend, it cover the basics, file input/output handles, etc, as well as the general syntax etc..

    It's all pretty straightforward.

    some of the shortcuts are really nice, and I can see why it's used a
    lot for massive text processing...

    Brevity of notation is one of it's great strengths and also one of it's
    great weaknesses, depending upon your POV. And the Perl philosophy of
    doing "what you mean" is nice, too.

    I don't know how well it would work for anything gui based..

    I've yet to find any environment that does GUI 'well', but look here:

    http://www.anjo.com/misc/MyBook.pl.screenshot.jpg

    for a look at an app I'm in the early stage of developing for personal
    use.

    and getting another book for more advanced topics like structure, and module creation etc... so far seems pretty damned cool...

    Perl comes with a lot ofgood documentation.

    Try 'perltoot' for an object-oriented tutorial and 'perlmod' for info on packages and modules. On Linus that would be 'perldoc perltoot', but
    under Windows... who knows?
