• best linux os with Synchr

From Starpilot@VERT/STAR to All on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 21:56:00
Is there a better or best Linux OS to run with Synchronet?
I have played with Red Hat some, but not while running Synchronet. I want to build a new system and use a Linux OS. I want to run the BBS and maybe use it for photos, DVD burning (watching movies), music CDs, would like to run a web site off it along with Synchronets Webserver. Would also like to play with c++, java programing. What about BBS games will I have any problems there? I want to run Bre, Clans etc. and Tradewars Server. Any suggestions?

It all depends on how well you know Linux .. I am running Gentoo linux with SBBS and it works great (but I've been using linux most of my life so I'm usually pretty good at fixing things that break)

If you are kind of new to the linux thing then I suggest using slackware or debian (both have telnetd enabled by default)

I was running OpenSuSE 10.2 32bit and 64bit SBBS seem to run great on it, just never got around to figuring out the DOSEMU tho.

FreeBSD rocks but for some reason I can't get PHP/MySQL working properly so I run Gentoo Linux and it seems to work alright

I was responding to a message that was posted in this message base. The
reason I wa recommending debian because it support apt-get and apt-cach and make it much easer to install linux application vers slackware.

I know it's been mentioned before, but perhaps the others were too polite.

    So.

Do you need some help with dosemu? I should have an update to the dosemu_howto (or whatever it's called) ready to send to DM sometime this weekend, in the meantime if you need help ask.

So far I have about a half dozen DOS games running, plus this editor (my old copy of IceEdit from way back) and have pretty well sorted out the simplest method of getting both external games and external editors running without
the need for multiple batch files or dosemu configurations. Also the method
I use allows for starting dosemu from the command prompt to run setup utilities/maintenance on doors and so on without screwing up the existing setup for the bbs.

Yes, I would look forward to some help... I have tried... I have problems with EMS.. memory problems.. I have a working dosemu.. have problems with the extended memory.. I did get Ambrosia working correctly.. awsome game under Linux...had a lib error of some kind. fixed it by a emerge lib-compat...fixed it by searching for the error I was getting... I was missing some dependences I love that game and hope to register it soon. Along with some quests. Kid's here sure like to play that game. I have always liked the LORD game since it came out. I was wondering if Deuce is going to port that for Linux sure would make it easier..

My yahoo id is: CoCo_Kid594 and my Ventrilo server is j5.dyndns.org for voice. I game alot at with my clan around 9pm-4am my web page is http://www.pggentoo.com

    Thanks.

In /etc/dosemu/dosemu.conf you can adjust your EMS and XMS handling. The
file should list the defaults which have worked fine here. If all else fails those settings can be disabled and you can use emm386.sys or QEMM (if you
can find a copy) to handle your memory management.

This is one of the Microsoft support articles outlining the various memory types: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/37242

here sure like to play that game. I have always liked the LORD game since came out. I was wondering if Deuce is going to port that for Linux sure wou make it easier..

Actually Michael Preslar is doing the code on LORD and there is a Linux port in beta at the moment. The drawback to the Linux version is no IGM support. Once you get DOSEMU dialed in the old DOS version works fine.

I'm in the middle of a rewrite of the DOSEMU help and the initial copy can be reviewed here:

    http://www.testing-solutions.org/Synchronet/DOSEMU-HandBook.html

Hopefully that will help you get a better handle on how DOSEMU works with Synchronet and some of the possibilities it offers. I'm in the middle of
some code modifications for some other software (started on them back in
June, keep getting sidetracked) so I'll probably be on one box or another
here quite a bit this weekend. You can email me through the link on the main page of my site if you need to.
