NetBSD with a Mach kernel if I remember right. And yes it's called Darwin had Darwin running on a Beige G3 300 once upon a time just to place with

    *insert foot in mouth*

I should have looked that up before I said it... it's based on FreeBSD and Mach.

What is the colon (":") for? If I want an enpty file I just do

    > filename.ext

    without a colon.

Portability. Null commands are invalid in csh. : is a shell builtin which does nothing and succeeds.

    the colon processes solid waste.

    Do people actually use csh?

I use tcsh. It has features my fingers require that bash doesn't have. I rarely use it for scripting though.

I know I don't. OS X used to ship with tcsh as the default shell. I'd have to boot up the old Mac to see if Panther had tcsh as the default. Tiger (which I'm running right now) has bash as the default shell. Which is nice, because its the default on nearly all Linux distros (and therefore I've used it a lot).

Was it tcsh as the default for all users or just for root? iirc, tcsh is only the default shell for root on FreeBSD.

I think up through Panther tcsh was default for everyone. Now it seems that bash is the default shell.

the default on nearly all Linux distros (and therefore I've used it a lot).

We have some SERIOUS old *nixsters here at work that are die hard csh users. Comes from years of working with HP-UX which didn't have bash for the longest time. We had to install it ourselves on the servers we used a few years back before they started migrating to Intel/Linux servers.

I've used it, don't really have any comments on it other than (as you said) bash is the default on most Linux distros so it is the shell I started using and am therfore the most comfortable with.

I've seen some script tricks that are easier (if not completely dependant) on using some other shell than bash but unless I have to use another shell I don't.
