Is anyone running Linux (other than Linpus) on a Netbook ?

A friend has purchased an Acer (Atom 250 ?) Netbook with 1 gig of Ram
and a 250 gig hard drive that came with Win7 Crippled err..'Starter',
which is turning out to be a real pain to work with...

Which Linux version might work well on this unit for someone who has
never seen Linux before so it would have to be simple to use?..

Would a Linux system network to a Windows computer ?
Could it share a dial-up internet connection through Windows ICS ?

good luck finding all the drivers for it too. netbooks need a motherboard chipset driver. my netbook uses the new Nvidea ION set and it was hell finding the hardware drivers for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu would work (or derivatives UNR/Kubuntu/Mint). As would OpenSuse or Fedora Core.

I'm pretty partial to Ubuntu myself. If the other system has ICS it should work as a client. ICS uses/issues NAT+DHCP. May want to see what the upgrade pricing is to Home Premium. I don't get the "starter" edition myself, other than to have another pricing grade for netbooks. Home Premium runs just as well.

im running debian on Asus eeepc 1000HA
i have only ONE issue that i can't fixed yet, the internal mic has lot
of noise that make it unusable the rest of the hardware work perfectly.

I have Debian Testing running on an Asus Eeepc 1005HA. In the process of moving what I normally do from my primary laptop (a PowerBook, which I want to reinstall dual boot OS X/Debian) over to it...

Given that; I'd say that Ubuntu 10.4 would be one to look at.

No experience with how well ICS works to begin with, much less with other systems; and when I was doing dialup, I always used a linux PC to do the connection... (An old small form factor PC with a serial port and a network card worked just fine for that...)

Upgrade to the next Win7 version up is somewhere between $80 and $100.

If she were to try a Linux version, from the other message now I'm
wondering if there might be motherboard issues. I *think* this one
was running Intel instead of Nividia video drives but I'd have to check.

Am I wrong in thinking that something like OpenSuse would not be as
'Plug and Play' as Ubuntu ? Is it one that has to be specially compiled ?
As I said this would be a Linux neophyte so I didn't want to suggest
anything too difficult to get running..

Are you running just simple Debian or one of the packages ?
I believe several are based on Debian, if not most...

IIRC; "adhoc" has to do with a way to do wireless networking...

so they can share printers and exchange files and such..

The short answer is; yes they can, in either direction. The long answer;
it depends...<g> Either can run a web or ftp server (or a bbs <g>), and either can access files that way. Both can share directories and printers, which the other can access. Which does not neccessarily mean that it is easy to set up... (Can depend on which versions of which OS you're using, and the applications available to them.)

I would Agree that 90% of the time they use that to refer to wireless
peer to peer networks, usually between just 2 computers although
technically a similar wired connection is called the same thing.
It basically just means 'improvised' with no central hub or server..

If you want to play games on linux, try crossover games or wine. Crossover will cost you money, but you can make most games run under it.
