• Backing up a Synchro VPS?

From poindexter FORTRAN@VERT/REALITY to All on Sunday, January 20, 2019 08:08:57
I'm thinking about moving my Windows Synchronet install to a Linux VPS; I'm assuming some people are running Synchronet on a VPS, and I was wondering what you do for backup?

I'd like to back up to my Windows desktop at home; my /sbbs/ folder with files and messages is about 7 gigs.

The last time I did this, the only game in town was rsync under cygwin on a Windows host and rsync running natively on the Linux VPS.

Is there any better solution out there people know of?

    Thanks!

I run mine under Linode, and linode does nightly snapshots of the entire disk (for a small fee).

While rsync isn't the only game in town, it's probably still the best and easiest option.

I'd definitely suggest keeping regular archives, though. Prior to the current incarnation of my BBS, I had a drive fail in the middle of a backup corrupting the backup and I lost everything.

If you are on linux then i have a backup script that keeps the last five backups. And i can second the value of the Linode backup service...

Would be happy to set up linx sbbs hosting for you ;)

i just write a script where it rars the bbs up and then send it to me via ftp.

why is your sbbs dir 7 gigs. do you have some junk files in there from doorgames? i know ambrosia can make some huge files.

oh, you nest your file areas in your sbbs dir? i keep it separate because i like to backup my bbs a lot and i have a lot of files.

Not a bad idea, separating them out.
