• Switching to MINT

From poindexter FORTRAN@VERT/REALITY to All on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 15:38:59
I've been running Lubuntu since 2014, and needed to upgrade my laptop. Lubuntu 18.10 uses LxQT instead of LXDE, and I ran into some glitches with it.

On a lark, I threw MINT 19 on it, and I'm impressed. Google Drive support, better eye candy, a search tool in the start menu, and it's not taking much more memory than LXDE.

The backup tool looks pretty cool, I'm going tosee about setting up a backup to my web host.

Apparently 19.1 is coming out my Christmas, we'll see what's changed. By then, I'll have an ultrabay SATA drive, which'll make backing up and restoring faster.

I like Linux Mint overall. I'm running Linux Mint on my secondary PC, which runs a couple servers and runs my BBS in a Win7 VM. Currently it has 18.3 (I believe) on it. I haven't upgraded to 19 as I've heard the upgrade process to 19.x doesn't seem to work very well. I may re-install a fresh copy of Mint on that machine eventually, since I upgraded to a larger hard drive a while ago and the only way I could make use of all the space was to add another partition, due to it using a MBR partition table. From what I've heard, updating to a GPT partition table would be better for a larger drive, and it sounds like the drive would need to be reformatted for that.

It looks like Proxmox is a whole Linux distribution? I'm not sure I'd want to install a different Linux distro on that machine of mine, as I like Mint, and it seems to be running well for what I need. Currently I'm using VirtualBox for my VM and it does what I need.

I've heard good things about it; I'm tempted to upgrade my desktop and turn it into a server/vm host. The desktop has a RAID controller, I could throw a handful more drives into it and use it as a storage device and vm host combined.

That's what I do with my CentOS box. My root drive is a pair of mirrored
SSDs not so much for any extra speed but for the safety of having a space.
This has root and /home on it, swap, boot /var etc.
Then I have 4 x 4TB hard drives in a RAID10 configuration. This is where everything else gets stored that I want like photos, music, videos. Stuff I don't ever want to lose. I backup using burp backup to a remote server
daily. I also have a 2GB "scratch" drive for when I do stuff like restores
of other people's stupidity. There's also a pair of bluray players so I can
do disc to disc copies if necessary.

    It works well.

Mint was already good, this just makes it even better! :)

After a couple of days, I'm sold. Google drive support and the search bar in the start menu make a huge difference.

I'm going to be working more remotely, and with a fresh copy of MINT, VirtualBox, Windows 7 and Aero support, a new battery and a SATA ultrabay dock for backups, I'll be in good shape.

Hmm, very tempting, but having only recently built my Mint box, I'm not keen to rebuild it.

Sounds like the ideal setup. :)
