I used to do a lot; it's been a few years since I've done much, so I'm rusty, though. Have a lot of friends that I haven't been able to convince to log on to my BBS regularly yet that are hardcore python advocates that use it regularly for work and hobby, though.

    scripting dont work for me.
I gave my python a script and she just stared at it.

Give her time. She's just being patient. ;-)

Since someone brought up Python, I would love to hear opinions as far as what a good book would be. I know I'm not helping the original poster here since I'm in the same boat, but figured I'd chime in.
I've looked at a few briefly and some look better than others (I have some experience in other languages), so I was curious what opinions people here might have.

Out of the languages that I know, I would say that python is about the easiest to write 'good' code in. It seems like its syntax really assists the programmer in sticking with all around good coding practice, IMO. I also know multiple other programmers on the east coast and they all state that they would rather be working in python than any other language.

That was the one thing I took away from just looking at the syntax. I can't say I know much about it, but the syntax itself looks quite 'manageable' if that makes sense.

Yeah. I think it's kind of funny how many people absolutely tweaked out about the mandatory whitespace/indenting for code blocks. I mean what a trivial semantic to get up in arms about; it makes for much more readable code and standardizes the different potential blocking styles and honestly you slip into practice with it after writing less than a dozen blocks of code and it's instantly second nature. God I wish I had more time to try brushing up on my coding skills lately instead of just slaving all day long and running around like a chicken with its head cut off just trying to keep up to date with the red tape without becoming mummified.

I'm used to the C-style curly brace syntax used in a lot of languages and am comfortable with it. That being said, I don't see why the whitespace method is considered such a radical change.
If I remember right, Cobol depending on whitespace being correct too, though I don't know if it was to the same extent as python. Of course, I'm not sure you'll see too many Cobol coders in these parts ;-)

comfortable with it. That being said, I don't see why the whitespace considered such a radical change.

This is crucial in ensuring everybody's code LOOKS similar.

The whitespace construct makes a great positive difference in a team of programmers who work on the same code.

The first thing I do when I open *anybodyies* C code in vim is to type
0vG==, which is goto line 0, visual highlight/selection, go to end of
file, and == auto-indents everything as it should be.

Unfortunately, if I end up making an improvement I need to submit back
to the author, I have to re-write those portions a 2nd time, using
THEIR styling, only in the lines effected. Otherwise the patch would be
    for nearly the entire file.

But, if it weren't for this feature, I'm not sure I would even get so
far, I have a very difficult time dealing with the many different tabs/spaces/mixed/unused/unconcerned that goes on there. Its great if
you're a preprocessor to simply skip all whitespace, its terrible for
the human mind to see an indentation that doesn't belong (not actually
a block), or miss a logical block statement because it wasn't indented
at all. Or to have to try tio figure out wether the author's tabstops
are 2, 4, 3, or 8 spaces, as some lines of code seem to line up while
others don't, especially when they get artsy fartsy about lining up all
of their multi-line statements beneath subsequent ('s and so on ...
